Hmm Hmm... So, I think I have my incubator working at the right temp finally! It's day 4, I'm new to incubators, always used broodys, and have no idea how to use one of these things. I think I figured it out.

I adjusted incubator temps, and when incubator reads 99.5, one thermometer is .3 off, and reads 99.8, and a meat thermometer, stuck in the side through the hole for the power, is a little hard to tell, goes by twos, a little farther than the middle of 98 and 100. Doing good now! Really cold here, especially at night and morning, so when I check on it then, temps are usually at 98.8..

:clap :ya :woot :weee

Hi, Gypsi. Sadly, it sounds like you're having a good run of bad luck. Low temp early on will usually result in a late hatch, so you may okay on that part. It depends on how long the temp was spiked as to whether or not it affected the embryos. What kind of eggs are you cooking? You don't have a candler? Once you reach day 16, and the eggs are viable, the chick is filling a large portion of the egg making it difficult to see inside. Even so, you should be able to detect an air cell on the round end if you get it lit up just right... and by tapping the egg lightly you should see movement inside the egg. You are 2 days out from lockdown, when the eggs will need to be on their sides so the chicks can move into hatching position. In the meantime, you need to get them out of the egg carton because the carton acts like insulation and isn't allowing the heat to distribute evenly around the egg. If you need the egg carton to keep the eggs upright, cut holes in the bottom and sides to allow air to reach as much of the egg as possible. It's too late to try to get the air cell where it needs to be at this time. If it's not there, it's not going to happen. I hope you have some success with this batch. If I may, I'd highly recommend allowing your incubator (this one or new one) to run for several days to make sure it's stable before setting any more eggs. Good luck, and you should know how it turns out in about 5 days...

Well I got home and cut the bottoms out of the egg carton (having removed the eggs first.) Their is a lighter spot on them but not always on the top of the egg, the largest part, which is why I moved them to the carton for a day or 2. and rotated the whole carton to try to gently shift the air bubble. No idea if it would work but it was the best idea I could come up with. I didn't know they made egg candlers, I use a flashlight in a dark room. After I get home tonight I can try and detect movement, or I can just keep doing my best. All of the eggs are full and dark and they are lighter than they were at the beginning so maybe not going to drown. Just worried about the air bubble not being where it is supposed to be. I WILL be buying a thermostat and building a better incubator before I try this again.

At this point I"m working on difficult territory where there is a lot of risk of failure, I realize this. I traded for the eggs before I had the incubator, and made sure I turned them twice a day while they were at room temp for 3 days I think. While I built the incubator. Will upload photos when I get home this evening, have bee club.
