There is always next time.
Hatch a batch counts days differently than they should. Day 21 does not start for one more hour.
A third chick has zipped its shell, but has not broken out yet. It was finishing its zip before I got in the shower, so only about 15 minutes ago.
The second pip was bleeding (yes, I bothered it when I was rolling it back over). It had begun to zip, and I wanted to be stupid. No excuse. I was just eager. I'm pretty sure it will be fine.

Patience is a virtue.

And I want it now!

I count 21 days from the time eggs come up to temperature. If they set were set on a Saturday at noon, they should hatch on a Saturday at noon. - give or take.

Howdy......kind of bummed out ...I only got one duckling this hatch.
He is a cutie though.
We call him J.D.
When we asked my granddaughter its name she said....."just duck".....so we call it.....J.D.

Quote: If and when I get ducks it'll either muscovies or it'll be cayuga or welsh harlequins. Muscovies appeal to me a lot, but there will need to be a lot of wing trimming... But I REALLY like the look of the cayuga and the fact that they lay those weird dark eggs...

But I have no housing and no place to even PUT their housing. So I will dream and enjoy all your duckie photos and reread the Storey Raising Ducks book again. I have a chicken coop and a bachelor pen to build (in the heat), and then I have a chicken breeding line to work on and hatch out...

AND IT WANT GOATS REAL REAL REAL BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a parakeet in high school - named it LB (for Little Bird).

Lived with my parents while I was in college and did well until my mother decided it was a reasonable idea to try to vacuum out the bottom of the cage with the vacuum hose while the bird was still inside the cage. No more LB.

13 of 18 eggs now have external pips. I'm off to shoot a couple games of pool up at the top of the far hill.
