I prefer a clean kill on a calm deer over a running deer any day. Adreneline causes the meat to taste gamey and be tough.
I've shot many a deer that's been run (not by dogs though) and never had any problems with it being tough or gamey. In my opinion the way it's handled after it's killed has as much to do with that. Although a clean shot a a calm deer is much preferred.

Cots?? I am with Sally on buying full grown birds. Will buy small chicks from a place, only...............when I know when they are coming in, and I'm one of the first ones there. I hatch mine. Hey Jand, what is that splash in your avatar? Love it! I have a splash OE that I hatched last hatched, pretty sure it's a boy. Big boy. The feathering is looking lavender, with the splash coming. Can't wait to see this one older. Hope he doesn't crow...loud. :/ I just need him to mate with my Marans girls that I hatched with him before he goes his way. Pretty sure I can find a good home for him. More snow on the way for us today. Says 100%. Also, for tomorrow..90%. Getting out much needed moisture in those mountains.
Good morning, Cynthia :hugs Thanks! That big boy is my splash copper Marans young'un, Hans. He'll be 20 weeks tomorrow. He's going to be one of my breeders

He's absolutely huge compared to his brother Franz and very much a gentleman. His crow? He doesn't say a lot but when he does it echoes all through the valley lol. It's manly that's for sure! Thankfully I live in chicken country so there's crowing coming from all directions and everyone is fine with it

Can't wait to see pics of your little splash as he grows up!! This is Hans when he was hatched:

Neither. I've had blackout problem off & on since June, and haven't been able to drive for 3 months at a time. Don't burn much gas that way, but I hate not being able to go where I need to go when I want to go. Current driving restriction is over this coming Saturday. 'Course, when the last restriction expired I jumped in the truck and went fishing; blacked out while I was there.
I'm so sorry. If we were closer, I'd pick you up, put you in a blind so you could still hunt. I really think that once I'm not able to hunt anymore, then that will be when it's time for me to leave this world. Be careful. Don't know how but try.

Oy vey no! come on chickies!!!

I'd love to tell him to go get some eggs, but I'm pretty sure I'd be given the stink-eye and told no way. And I doubt that his coworker that rented the car would want to take a road trip just for eggs...

2000 posts since I was last on...

Yeah. 6 hours, 100 posts for me, and I'm doing this:

I think I've given up actually absorbing what was said. That and I'm not a hunter, so half of it is beyond my attention span.

It depends on how spooked the deer is. If it's just "pushed" it won't have adreneline pumping, but one that's scared, especially if it's been shot at or wounded, is definitely different than one strolling through. I much prefer to drop a grazing deer in it's tracks thaan chase one down after it's been spooked and shot. But yes, handling afterwards makes a difference, too. I always field dress mine to cool the carcass as quickly as possible.

X2 on the processing. I do my own so I can do it the way I like it. I'm no pro but to me mine taste better than any that I've tried from different processors.

I will, believe me. On medication for it, but will never know if it's working or not unless I have another episode; was 4 months between the first two.
