[@=/u/65471/mlm-Mike]@mlm Mike[/@] please advise on this? Is this something I can work on myself or do I need to call someone with more experience? This is one of my 7-mo wethers. They were both like that on all four hooves, but the other one wasn't quite as bad. I had a friend showing me how to trim the hooves; he didn't feel comfortable cutting any farther. That growth is soft. Would concrete to climb on help any at this point?
You should be able to work on it yourself. The black around the edges is like cutting finger nail, so you could get along the edges even and take care of the front points. Whites ok, you'll see pink before it bleeds. Yes, stones concrete (touch surface), rocks, would be good for their hooves.
I think that was before he trimmed it. He did the black parts and I watched him, but it's that soft round part toward the back. It makes them stand unevenly. I built a temporary milk stand for the nanny so my neighbor could teach me to milk. Both whethers were up and down off of it over and over. They loved it! I have some concrete stands in their pen in the back, but I don't think they use them.

What breeds did you say they were?

LOL Thank you! The black and white one is part Magpie, I believe. The black one was a Cayuga, and the other was a Khaki Campbell. My female Cayuga and my male KC are both gone now. :'( But my female Magpie mix is doing great, and she has male Mallard and a female Blue Swedish mix (I believe) for playmates now.

I think I have 1 1/2 tons of hay delivered every three months, but I'll have to check records to verify that.
