NEVER USE VENT holes as a means to Control HUMIDITY especially during HATCH DAYS!

You realize humidity is NOT a set number just a tool to get the correct weight loss in the egg?

You understand the majority of people for standard hatching eggs run the first 7 days 25-30% humidity (possibly 35%for shipped eggs) and adjusted from there for weight loss?

You understand that you can in fact candle every two days after day 7 to just keep a closer eye on weight loss so you dont need to make major changes later on?

Try to add water above in containers and not in the troughs until lockdown?

I've read through most of these topics (I'm autistic and slightly OCD - so by the time I posted here, I've sort of already read through a *lot* of information, but wanted to make sure I understood what I read? I'm at the "talking through stage" of education.... lol that's how I learn... read, clarify, "action" - if that makes sense!)

So, to be clear, am I answering the questions in your above post, or re-reading all the information, and then asking questions if I have any later?

you are not answering, just a few extra tips you may have missed thats all. like the turning more than 3xs humidity and how it really works, calibrating and just a few others. this was made to help everyone in general for a quicker run down of what is really important and what most people mess up on.... although as you know there is much much more lol

I guess I'll post here - I'm using an incubator that my mother in law sent for my daughter. It's got "okay" reviews on amazon - meaning, people have had an okay hatch success rate with it, (more good than bad reviews, we'll put it that way.)
It's a small 10 egg incubator. We are going to try 4-5 eggs - we have 2/5 collected. (We only have 4 laying hens, and atm, only our RIR really lays daily. It's hit or miss on who usually lays a second or third egg, and we've never had 4 in one day. LOL)

Our cochin rooster will be the daddy.

One of the eggs is significantly larger than our 3 small hens, so i'm 100% sure it's from our RIR hen.
So we for sure have a "tiny" egg. (her name is tiny.) Then, my daughter's pretty sure our Cochin white hen, is one of our regular layers too, compared to white freckles (as seen in the above picture - thats white freckles) and little gray.

White fluff ^^

No idea what we are going to get from white/gray hens mixed with our cochin rooster. He's pretty though.

Anyways This is the incubator :

https://www.amazon.com/Yosoo-Chicke...d=1471366912&sr=8-2&keywords=10+egg+incubator

We will be giving the eggs a try. I know it's roughly a 21 day incubation period. The eggs will be put in with in 2-3 days of collection. I'm turning it on tonight to mess with the temps, so I have a couple days to play with it, before putting the eggs in there. I'm keeping the eggs collected in my bathroom in a plastic bowl until we have all the ones we want collected. We have tested the eggs we eat to make sure they are fertile (i.e. checking for the bullseye, and our rooster has more than done his job. LOL)

After that, I'll be writing an X and an O on them - and turning 3x a day to alternate sides at night.

I know day 18-19 we do a lock down and raise the humidity??? (theoretically? Not sure if it's possible with this incubator. If anyone has used it, any tips on it would be appreciated for better success.) and I've never candled an egg, or looked for air sacs before, so this, too will be a new project for us.

Our eggs are light colored, light pink to light brown - so we shouldn't have too many troubles "seeing" through them at least.

Anyways - any tips on the incubator we are using to have the best success chance? My daughter wanted to participate in the egg bingo type threads to see if she could hatch other types of chickens down the road, but I won't try to win eggs for her, if we haven't' figured out how to successfully hatch an egg yet. ;)

and when you get your thermo/hygro make sure to calibrate it
Calibration is a MUST: HOW TO CALIBRATE post #9068

hello!!

Thanks liz.
You always have beautiful birds!
Good morning/afternoon all!! Thank you for all the comments about my worms - It didn't look like maggots or fly larvae to me. These were super skinny - thinner than a string of yarn, pure white and about half an inch long, and they were crawling in and out of holes in the sludge.... Any time I've seen maggots - they have been short, fat, white, wriggling things. They wiggle around, they don't crawl - like a real worm crawl.

This coop has been empty for almost 3 weeks. It's been HOT, and I have been busy and didn't clean it right away - the ones WITH chickens needed cleaning sooner.

I will be taking some fecal samples from the group of chickens that were in that coop.. These are chicks that had been outside 3 or 4 times - while I cleaned their coop. So they could have picked up something then. But, I'm thinking it's something else - I don't think they were from the chicks.

But for other news - the first 4H meeting I am going to is tonight! By signing up, I get to keep my chickens!!

Just curious, can anyone tell me if these are roosters? I have someone crowing in this pen, and I can't see who is doing the crowing. I suspect these...

awesome about the 4h, sorry about the worms, the way you describe sounds like tape worms but i have no idea -good luck!
What do I do when the natural environment we live in, is 40-60+ % humidity every day? And, how do you up the humidity if there's not an option for it on the incubator? Also, where does one find a calibrated one? Amazon? Our feed store doesn't sell anything besides the brooder thermo.
run it dry for the first 18 days, add no water, and if you need it lower add a bag of rice like MC said

Not a trick question...

-Kathy
after my read back i saw what your questions were lol

Thanks - I did a lot of reading, but I just wanted to double check what I "read" to make sure I understood it correctly. ;) I guess I'll let you know how things go in about 10 days at our first 7 day candling. lol

Hi Miss Sunshine!!!

Makes sense, thanks. I just want to make sure it's okay for me to "talk" through the stuff i've learned; on this thread too - in order to organize it, so I can actually apply what I read. I don't want to bother anyone by asking questions, or clarifying information. I just need to "paint a picture" with all the information I've read, like putting puzzle pieces together, in order to apply the data I accumulated. (I see in pictures, so until the picture is fully formed, I'm sort of left scratching my head, I promise I'm not as dumb as I seem! I just have a unique learning style haha)

As to the turning - 3x works best for us, because breakfast/lunch/dinner is easy to make sure they get turned the right amount of times to be even over night - with 4 kids, I can't guarantee, i'll have the ability, especially if I run errands in any given day, and our potential trips out of town for the day that I can do more than 3 in a 24 hour period. (we've never been gone over night, and I can justify waking up in the middle of the night to compensate for missing an egg-turning during the daytime.)

I am still figuring out how you do eggs in an incubator if you're gone for a day. Do you have suggestions on that? Does it matter WHEN you turn them if it's at least 3-5x in a 24 hour period? or, if I did 5x on a day that I'm here, would managing 3x in a 24 hour period be acceptable? My 2 year old has doctors appointments and it's 6+ hours of driving, plus the length of the doctors apt. He's a previous 24-weeker, so we see a lot of specialists still.

I'm trying to figure out how to manage the turning thing at this point, more than the other stuff. We also have 40-80% humidity in our area, and getting the humidity lower until the end, will be a struggle/key thing too. (though someone recommended rice in a sock, so I may try that.)
