IMHO, everyone should know how to safely handle, load, unload, use the safety and shoot a variety of firearms whether they like them or not or whether they intend to use them or not. They are everywhere in this country so it's akin to being able to drive a stick shift whether you ever own one or not.
I agree... even though I prefer to have large dogs around for protection against creatures like racoons. My kids are learning how to shoot, and we have guns, safely, locked up in the house in case we need them for something.

Our great pyr's are puppies, but they chased off a pitbull, and I know as they get bigger, they'll be able to keep our flock safe from other predators.

I don't disagree. I know that most of my own discomfort with hand guns is from not being raised around them at all. My brothers got BB guns when I was a kid and they promptly started shooting each other with them. They were then made to destroy the guns and that was the end of guns in my mom's house. I never got trained with guns of any kind, though I did recreationally shoot with friends once or twice. Once all my kids are in school this year I can make time to go to a gun range and practice.

I would like to see gun safety taught in schools, like they do with home ec and other life skills.

I only suspected because of the eye bubbles. but I don't know if they would appear with any kind of swelling, or if a virus or bacteria would have to be present for the bubbles to appear. The swelling happened over the period of an hour after the attack, I would think it would take longer for a virus or bacteria to flare up and cause issues.

Since I've never had a bird with an injured face I was hoping someone could tell me if they've seen this in a bird that was bitten by a raccoon in the face/head area and was known to not be a carrier of respiratory bugs.
I don't recall any severe swelling with birds chewed by raccoons. That isn't a large sample size however since most aren't alive.

CC you have so many there is a reason way you don't butcher all year long?
Another reason is because of this small gene pool I have to hatch a lot and let the birds mature so I can select breeders wisely. I can only choose about 20% of males for food when they're chicks. The rest need to grow out to be sure.

That's hilarious. I get that too.

We have a pretty gun happy state here and lots of gun violence. Not as bad a Chicago but bad for our size.
We have 2 large cities on both sides of the state and lots of rural space. The rural legislators get their way through sheer numbers. The constituents in the cities have been sick of the gun violence for a long time and would like to see more control but their voices aren't heard.
That's why my neighbors freak out when I discharge a firearm. They left the city to get away from the constant gunfire.

I know it's just a case of mind over matter with me, but if there's no mind, as in my case, it doesn't matter.

I agree... I'll eat either.... But I don't have any issues with natural casing as it is what God (nature) provided..... I also love the frame of mind that our ancestors were probably way smarter than we were we just have more technology. They had to learn survival

Dear wife likes the tree too much. So it stays.

I hear you there buddy
Not a clue

Benny already explained collagen

As a mature gentleman, like myself, we have the added benefit of hindsight, insight and foresight.

Probably 2 reasons. I don't hatch consistently most years so ages are staggered. Also, I hate butchering in summer when flies are aplenty.
Sometimes I hold processing classes to teach others how to do the deed (and that's the only time I get help).

I get it. But you did suspect an illness too. Ill chickens can get attacked too.

Vegetarian goo.

X2

My son was a chef in a Vietnamese Vegetarian restaurant. They made meat out of all sorts of things that was fairly edible.
They did have some egg dishes though and I sold them some of mine.

They'll be fine. Perhaps a bit salty for a daily diet but OK once in a while.
That's the beauty of chickens. They can get most of our leftovers as long as we provide a mostly balanced diet.

I have guns and am pro gun but our Missouri Legislature just overdid it.
They overrode the governors veto of a bill allowing ANYONE to carry a concealed weapon WITHOUT A PERMIT or TRAINING OF ANY KIND.
Law enforcement all over the state was against it.

Michigan's pretty liberal on gun carry but you do have to be trained and retrained every time you re-up

Very true I believe our country safer with an armed public. Granted we have a military but we have a lot of outside influential enemies. I think Al-Qaeda would have a hard time taking the countryside. There's a bunch of rednecks out there that can shoot pretty good
