First year they kept flipping over, and I was unable to save any of them.

Second year it was blackhead.

I'm reading through that other thread now. That's good information. do you find that it happens more often in the heritage/larger turkeys vs the more wild-smaller style turkeys?

Size matters? Or, is it just a turkey thing?

And, i'm really, really sorry to hear about the blackhead problem. That's actually one of my concerns since i'll have ducks and chickens on my property. I prefer turkey meat, so the birds I wanted to get would be primarily for eating.

Tried again after blackhead and was successful, and none of those were flippers. Losing the two to blackhead was very educational, so now I know how to treat that.

Got any information on treating black head? I always forward the links to my husband, so he can read it too. ;)

Quote: Not sure what the FOS problem was, perhaps it was something genetic, or something they picked up at the feed store. If I remember correctly, the flippers were all heritage breeds.

Since you are going to eat your turkeys, you will really should consider keeping them on ground that chickens have not been on, because the medications used to treat blackhead are banned for use in food animals.

Makes sense. I have an idea on where I wanted to pen up my turkeys. I was reading that turkeys don't "play well" with other poultry, like chickens, and often kill them. So I was assuming I probably had to keep them separated because of that.

I have an area with some big tree's on the side of the house that we aren't using for anything that would be an ideal place for a turkey pen. It would have shade, and lots of foraging material. Just need to fence it off, build shelters. I just haven't quite figured out how to keep them from escaping if they are really motivated to go away if I let them free-range a fenced area.

My chickens never try to escape, but turkey's are known to wander from what I've read.
