What breed are you getting?

-Kathy
Half slate/half heritage cross breed. The guy said they tend to be healthier/smaller then the heritage breed, but bigger with more meat than the slates. Or that's been his experience with them. He's been breeding them like this for about 10 years now. We talked on the phone for quite a while. Apparently, he says his chicks come out "red white and blue" which has been a bonus for kids raising them.

Of course, I know nothing about turkey's other than the wild-game turkey's survive better than the big heritage breeds. I wanted to make sure the ones he had, could reproduce naturally, I have no desire to artificially inseminate, to breed turkeys.

I tried that with a mastiff once. Never, ever again.

do you have pictures of his birds?

What did he suggest you feed them?

-Kathy
I don't remember what he said.

I didn't write it down at the time, because I figured I'd ask him again on monday if I went ahead and ordered them and would have time to grab it. I didn't think TSC wouldn't carry poult options :hmm

Where in Texas are you? Let me know and I'll ask my peafowl buddies if they know of some place where you can get some starter.

-Kathy
I'm down by the mexican border. We are pretty rural and texas is pretty big. I'd be shocked if your friends were anywhere near me.

Most people here have meat birds, and eat goat meat, we have a lot of cows and sheep, too in the area.

TSC mostly has chicken stuff. I can try the other smaller farm stores, but after that, the closest place that may have something would be San Antonio. There's a feed store NEAR where my son's' having his surgery. If I can get him to tolerate making a stop on the way home, I'll probably swing by and see if I can grab feed. Their store was like 50x the size of our local TSC.
