I have my first hatch set in an old Little Giant 5200 still air bator. It's holding temps/humidity really well where I have it so I'm hoping we get at least a few cotton balls chirping around in there in 19 more days! I'm going the more relaxed route, trying not to overly fuss over them as long as they stay turned and the temps stay steady.
Hi, Joelene!

I don't think your approach is going to work. You have to be a broody mama hen and fuss over them all the time!

Just kidding!!! That's the best approach possible. As long as you can keep a steady temp of 101F (@ top of eggs) and decent humidity in the bator, nature will take care of the rest. Welcome to the thread!!!

Finished! Here are my share of very tiny but cute kid. The two brown ones are trades of two of my chicks for marans.
Good job, daxi! Looks like you've got a brooder full of happy, healthy chickies! Congratulations!!!

How's it going?
Hi, Honey! Okay, that looks a little weird when I typed it... but whatever! Going great! And yous???

My temp on the back says 82, but they are all away from the 250 bulb. Do I need to raise it?
If they're scattered away from it, it's too hot. If they pile up and chirp loudly, it's not warm enough. Sounds like you might need to raise it just a touch...

@Sally SunshineGreat link. Thanks.
@Ur-ur-ur-urrrvery cute video. I like my Barred rocks. Do you know if the black chicks from my Barred rocks are sex links, and what the dots mean? The roos were a Lavender Orpington and a mix that looks sort of like a new Hampshire but he is orange

and I am not sure how its going! You tell us! what did santa bring for you guys?
Good! I'm sheltering inside right now from the crazy windstorm outside drawing some birds. I don't celebrate Christmas but my grandma always gets me a amazon gift card. I'm gonna get a book about training a herding dog with it.

Thanks, Sally Sunshine!

Super excited to see how we hatch out. Yes, we have it at 102 at the top of the eggs in the still air, not worrying much about raising humidity until lockdown - it's pretty even with our home.

Thanks, daxi! I can't tell you what you can expect from a mixed roo. I know my black(er) chicks are pullets, and the light grays are more than likely roos. They're just about to turn 3 weeks, and some of the combs are starting to fill in, and one is growing it's wattles, so it's definitely a roo. I tried using head spots, leg colors, and feather shading to try to sex them early on... but I pretty much gave up on it. I should be able to tell which is which in another week by their feathering and combs/wattles. Sorry I couldn't give a better answer...

Surprises are awesome!!!

Oh, and the breeds! I resisted buying Welsummer and Marans eggs locally so we could get our hatch rates up and get to know the bator first with some barnyard mixes. BEAUTIFUL eggs! Black Australorps, Buff Orps, Production Reds, just a bunch of brown layers that give some beautiful colors. Lots of pinks, too!

Lovely eggs! I love seeing all the different shades of eggs we get, greens, blues, browns, and pinks. It helps sell eggs too! People are mesmerized by all the different colors.
