do you think this is a girl?

I only have a few boys left, I sold all the others right away except spook and he may even be a boy idk for sure yet.
They are starting to fly the brooder already, turds! Its time to get out to the Serama Saloon grow out brooder pen! I will miss their chirping, soon day 7 on the next bunch though

So I will post over here since the other thread moves so fast about so many other topics...

I am doing another batch of eggs after the "Halloween" hatch, but this time my husband is in charge of it. Because he's read so much and thinks he knows it all. We received 12 "Araucana" eggs (once again, my doubt they are pure because ebay). Most of them had detached air cells. Anyways, so he's controlling the humidity, and he wants it up between 45 & 50% the entire incubation. So I sanitized and set up the bator again, and away we go! We did the 7 day candle last night and 6 of the 12 were clear (no blood ring even) but all 6 that were developing look really good! Air cells look pretty decent right now too, we'll see how they look on day 10/14. Of course I had to use a sharpie to mark the air cells because our pencil went MIA, and he nearly had a fit about it "are you sure it's not going to kill them?!"... I had to show him the post about the sharpie and expo marker that hatched just fine for him to believe me!

ETA: I'm letting my husband do everything in regards to humidity, even if he's wrong. This is his show, I'm just candling/marking them. Even though I personally think the humidity is a bit high. He knows my opinion on that subject.

Send me a pm... might be able to help you on what to expect from those eggs... :)

Hello there! WElcome to the thread! what a bummer for the flock :( How harsh is the weather in west tx? Mostly, it's just hot. This winter is supposed to be bad, but typically it gets to around 0*. Jan-March is usually the coldest time here. do you have a place to winter little ones or a way to sell them off if you hatch just for practice? Well, I have a huge barn they can stay in out of the elements, and I might be able to sell them. how have you prevented a kill from happening again? They are secure now, and I only let them out of I'm home to supervise. My husband is supposed to bring me an RV from the deer lease this weekend, which is going to be turned into my main coop. do you know what gottum in the first place? Stray dogs, I'm almost positive. Nothing eaten or mangled, just killed and left behind. I live in the country, and we get occasional dogs dumped here. I left the gate open so they could hang in the front yard. My mistake, and it won't be made again. Texas is terrible for preds isnt it? Oh, yes! What do those pullets combs and wattles look like? are they starting to show some red yet? Unfortunately, just the normal pink. No squatting eitherwhat is a pumpjack anyways? It's the seesaw looking thing used to pull oil out of the ground. I'm in oil and cotton country :pop where have you been researching incubation?Here on BYC, just reading threads and looking at what others are doing/have done. I like holding hands! Music to my ears. I'm a show me type of person, so I'm nervous just trying it on my own. Its good for you, dont you know that? Do you know that you need to buy some extra thermo/hygros for your incubator because you should never rely on the one that came with it? Nope, but I will buy them tomorrow. Any suggestions on brands?and you always need to calibrate and make sure your spot on? This I do know, I had to calibrate my fish tank heaters, but it's been a long while. Do you know that the best eggs to start out with are local eggs, they have to be fresh eggs, and yea its best if they are fertilized :lau but you know that! but seriously less that 10 days from lay is always best! Do you have access to local eggs to practice with? My quail actually just started laying 3 days ago, I'm up to 10 eggs. They are most definitely fertile, much to my daughter's never ending amusement. Do you have any dream breeds you would like? Well, I miss my Easter edgers and the colored eggs I was going to get. I'd like a few true Ameraucanas, but that's a needle in a haystack search. Hamburgs are pretty, I'd like a couple Jersey Giants someday. How many questions is too many to ask when you first meet someone? Is there ever too many? Nah!!! Thank you for humoring me I sowwy

Well, first he used a sharpie marker and made a huge + on the back of my beautiful bead board finished garage wall. He turned the lights on in there, and set up a table at the end of the driveway, after measuring the distance. Then I got to hold the light and hand him the correct bore sights and tools to sight it. All while I scrolled through this thread. I love him but almost kicked him when I saw the + on my wall. Sharpie. Really?

By the way, if I hatch chicks, I could keep them in the kids bathroom for quite a while, like I did last time. I started with 8, then quickly went up to 38, and all the while, my sweet man sat in the next room, totally oblivious. They were in there about 3 weeks before he asked what the noise was. Lol. I think he was in denial.

This is probably too late if he's already left for deer camp, but I hope he's not relying too much on bore sighters; the ones I've used ain't all that accurate. That's the bad news. the good news is he can get his gun hitting dead center with just 2 shots. He probably knows that trick already, but if he doesn't let me know...I'd be happy to lay it out for him; not complicated at all.

@Cynthia12
, I wish you were closer, I'd take some of those fluff balls off your hands. ;)

@holm25
, I see you raise Standard Cochins, how do you like them? What is their egg production like? I'd really like to get some next spring, but I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on how well they do.

I love the Cochins. They arent the best layers but they are fair to good. I have heard people complain about them but I have had nothing to complain about. I honestly think people get bored and complain about whatever comes to mind. But I dont know...
