I've now got 5 hatched and 3 pipped - one from my 5/15 set is hatching early. I had to scoot it over to the lockdown 'bator. Hopefully I'll have 3 more chicks in the morning!

Ugh, I can't sleep. Is anyone even on?

I keep thinking about all the chickens I'm going to be incubating and the new breeds I'm going to get and I'm fretting about how I'm going to coordinate the different batches of chicks in my coop. I'm also fretting about getting ducks for the first time and their different needs. Basically I need to stop thinking about chickens (is that even possible?

) and go GO BACK TO SLEEP.

But yet when I can't sleep I go a chicken forum so I think my sleep is screwed.

This has seriously been the two busiest months of my life with traveling and non stop company. Huge change having so much company!

In October was hatching along with all of you and now hatching along with company and dead run mode all the time.

It is COLD and just want ya'll to know I'm thinking about you and wondering how everyone is doing. I will be back when things slow down.....................

hey, yall i just went and got two new non digital thermometers for my incubator with the hygrometer attached, but they are about 1 degree apart, how do i know how accurate they are?

I see cc has helped you out! @RavynFallen hope will help you out wiith some tips for hatching calls when she has time or hook you up with some links. keep in touch please we would love to know how it goes with them calls.

Put them in a zip lock bag, mix some crushed ice and a bit of water to form a slurry and submerge the bag in the ice for a few (5?) minutes to calibrate the temp.
I don't know how you would do the hygrometer, mine all have the remote probe and can be submerged in a salt mixture to calibrate, but there are several methods listed for this on page one.

Got a couple new EE mix peeps from the HAL so far... (Some experimental crosses for the mixed layer pen) Looks like I should have 2 walnut comb birds here with the slw X EE cross.




I still have 5 shipped eggs in lockdown on day 19, and 2 test eggs in the Brinsea from the splash Marans roo in my avy on day 15.

I used a large heating pad (12' x 24") for the cave, and moved my 3 week old chicks to the other side of the brooder so the newborn chicks could use the Sweeter Heater. Newborns adapt to the SH immediately. The older chicks were a little leery of the HPC, but went to it as soon as the lights went out. I eased down there about 30 minutes after lights out, and all 15 were snuggled down beneath it. It appears to be working perfectly! I think I've found the perfect solution for staggered hatches (or should I say different aged chicks?).
All the chicks looked happy and healthy this morning!

How do you keep your heat pad cave cleaned? I'm guessing they sit on them and poop all over 'em like they do the heat plates. I'm thinking no way I want to dismantle it every few days to wash it.

I've got to go down and install a light fixture on the other side of the brooder so the older chicks will have a little more light. I think they get enough light spilling in from the other side of the brooder, but the wife doesn't seem to agree with that. So we compromised... and I get to install another light. I also need to finish connecting the wiring going to the coop and install a deicer in the water bucket. I also have to replace a section of plywood the wiring and conduit will run through going into the basement. I also have to... ugh... I may be gone a little while. Good thing Sally's back to hold the fort down. Besides... it's her fort!!!

I have 2 premier heat plates and yes the chicks take right to them and are SO quiet and content! But I really like that heater cave idea for the older chicks too so I can use the heat plates for the youngest ones.

I had the same problem. Woke about 230, caught up here, the ny Hal page, and granny's , then tried to sleep while waiting for my last ny egg to start zippin!
It's a wonder I managed to fall asleep for another hour!

I managed to get back to sleep at 6. I woke up at 8:30 though. cofffeeeeee....
I told my parents what kept me up last night, mom says I need a 12 step program for chickens. I told them I could be obsessed with something worse! At least I could make a living breeding chickens if I wanted to.

I am a gen u wine appliance technician.
I make house calls.
On washers dryers fridges freezers ranges wall ovens dishwashers and the like...
