I was! Hahaaha, my father in law bid on the eggs and won without telling me! and I can't do the shipped eggs by themselves, they're coming from West Virginia!! What if only one hatches, it needs a guarenteed buddy.

They're doing great! I can't even figure out which one is the air bubble one now, no bubbles that I can see. I've decided to keep 6 and the rest have homes lined up! hooray!
Bubbles? Did someone say Bubbles?

Oh, Bubbles...come out, come out, wherever you are (assuming, of course, that you know where you are)

Chicks are very quiet with the heat plate... that's for sure. They love it, and I love it! I may have to purchase a larger heat plate or two in the spring when my operation expands. At least that's the plan. The cave shouldn't be too much trouble for me to keep clean. I had some spare pieces of vinyl flooring, and I cut a piece a little larger than the heat pad and zip tied it over the pad on the ends, then used Gorilla Tape along the edges to seal them off and keep the vinyl from moving. Not likely it would, but the tape also covered the jagged ends where I cut the welded wire and construction cloth. Anything that's waterproof should work for a cover. The original plan I saw for the HPC used a towel covered with Peel-n-stick plastic, but I thought it was a little too thin. Sharp claws would have it torn to shreds once the chicks started scratching it. I think it'll take a long time for them to scratch through heavy vinyl flooring!
Well got the light installed and started to replace the piece of plywood that was rotting on the bottom beside the basement door. Turns out to be much worse than I thought. The entire bottom of the frame is rotted out, and termites were eating into the frame all the way to the top. Fortunately, it's a wooden frame surrounded by brick. Will have to replace all of it, which means a trip to Lowe's 20 miles away. Could have been worse is suppose, but the damage is contained to one section of the doorway. Gonna take longer than anticipated... @JandTRanch... here are some pics of the HPC: The duplex: My #1 pullet got over to the side with the 1 day olds. Size comparison between a 1 day old chick and (almost) 4 week old chick: Looks like the baby is mimicking the older bird's action, but it was actually plucking it's tail feathers! :lau One last pic of the duplex:
Sorry I disappeared lol we had to take advantage of the decent weather today and run some errands, get the coops cleaned and shavings down in the runs to help dry things out. We've got a muddy mess out there

Great idea to use vinyl on the hpc!! Looks like that ought to hold up well! Awesome pics of your setup too, thanks for posting those

I am showing that cool duplex brooder to my husband- he loves to build stuff (yay!) it's great to have multiple options for grow out areas! Hope you and your wife have a fun date at Lowes

Thumbs up to your wife for being cool like that! Sounds like you're going to have quite a bit of work to do on the floor when you get back. Good luck!

has anyone ever won an auction on ebay for call duck eggs from boys_3, trying to find out if he is legit before i bid

Yes, and yes... my Io baby is from theirs...

400

400

BUT!!!!

If you have never hatched Calls before, I STRONGLY suggest you find local ones to try first before shipped... Calls are extremely difficult and shipped Calls are doubly so...

he has a 99.0% rating, i have been looking local for a while with no success, i want show quality( all the pics look pet quality but will help with hatching) and i want to know what colors i am getting, but for this price and since i probably wont be breeding i feel like this is my best bet
what was your hatch rate and what did you get out of it

I was lucky to get Io out of that hatch... fertility of the eggs from them was perfect, eggs were just damaged due to shipping even though they packed them great... plus hatching them is so very, very tough...

You can get BQ or SQ from ones that look PQ, and you will get lots of PQ from SQ and BQ... if you want good quality, the only way to ensure that is to buy juvies or adults from a breeder...

Also, they are seasonal layers... most have stopped laying already or are about to... actually, due to the odd weather we were lucky they laid this late... most won't start laying again til anywhere from the end of the month up to March...

They have a lot of Calls, so lots of eggs... and most do not hatch ducks at this time of year... they're waaaay more messy than chickens and will have to stay inside for about 2 months, give or take... the real cold weather is coming up and acclimation to outside will take longer and be more difficult... just an fyi... :)
