From what I understand, giving ivermectin to a dog with a large load of heartworms can kill it. My dog gets monthly ivermectin, but she has tested negative.

heartguard for dogs is Ivermectin & Pyrantel pamoate treats: heartworms, roundworms and hookworms,

dogs must be tested and free of heartworms first or already be on the marketed preventatives before switching over, it can kill a dog if its already infested with heartworms.
