I had an uncle who wouldn't eat chicken 'cause when he grew up on the farm he saw them pecking in the fresh cow piesI do too!! For a funny story, I work with someone that has a few backyard chickens. They give away ALL the eggs, because her husband is freaked out by eating something their chickens laid. Says it's like eating their children!

Hey Jenny. I'd leave the gal alone. But, I got a ? for you. Is she in the coop with the rest of the flock? You might want to be sure the rest of the flock can't harass the chicks when she does take them off the nest. Also, be sure there's no open water that they can fall into. You'll basically have to check out the coop, or the area where they are, and ask yourself the following question: Is there anything in this environment that the chick can use to commit suicide with? Cause, basically, they come out of the egg, looking for ways to kill themselves! If you can keep a close eye on the situation, you should be able to check the nest when she comes off, and perhaps rescue any egglets that are viable that she might leave behind.Ok guys I'm back with my broody questions!! Sorry but the broody thread is waaaay less active than this one and I am impatient and figured one of you might know...so as I posted yesterday I have a broody sitting on 4 eggs. Its her first time and she is young. Its also MY first time trying with a broody. So yesterday was day 21 and i could hear cracking and peeping. Today is day 22 and I can hear chirping and it looks like her tailfeathers are "wiggling" a little when they chirp but she is still sitting non stop. She had to have gotten up at some point last night because when I checked on her at 6 am there was a giant poo pile in front of the waterer. So...with it being day 22 should I lift her and check? And if there are eggs that havent hatched do I take them? She gives me the mega death stare if I even attempt to go toward her. Also, if I move her (with gloves on because she is a fighter) then will she possibly step on/smush her chicks? What to do, what to do...?
I just made fresh egg bread in the bread machine and slaughtered it in homemade gooseberry elderflower jam. I am in heaven~![]()
I believe that you slaughter it with a sharp butter knife. How does one go about slaughtering bead? Inquiring minds want to know.
I have to keep an eye on my bator around day 7, day 14, and at lock down. Need to inch the thermostat back due to increased metabolism = increased heat.INCUBATION QUESTION:
I've got the LG styrobator everyone loves to hate. Usually run 50-70%, not bad I guess. But I ALWAYS get a spike of about 103 near the end of the second week and have to adjust the temp. Then it ALWAYS goes cool after most of the chicks are hatched, in the brooder, and I'm just waiting on the stragglers. So I have to turn it back up.
An I crazy for believing this is because the chicks are putting off their own heat?
Those eggs wouldn't be dirty if the coop and nest box were kept clean! Amazing how folks are so isolated from the food chain these days. I work with a gal who has 2 kids to raise. She hates to cook meat, because she doesn't like the way it looks. Went postal a while ago b/c she spilled some "chicken juice" on the floor, and didn't have anything in the house strong enough to "sterilize the floor".I had a WEIRD customer like that, not in the children aspect though.
"They're just pets and we don't want to eat dirty eggs"
