INCUBATING w/FRIENDS! w/Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs No problem!

So....we ordered a dozen lavender Orpington and BCM eggs from a respected breeder in CT. We are in Southern California. She said they'd be shipped Fed Ex. We naturally assumed air, that we'd be receiving them around Wednesday- letting them rest (I think I saw 24 hour recommendation recently...?), and setting Friday. I just looked at the tracking and it says estimated delivery Friday! I inspect further and it says Fed Ex GROUND. I am brand, spankin, new to all this. Is it normal to ship eggs this time of year, across the entire country, by ground? I can only imagine what they'll look like after all the handling!

Sage advice and tips greatly appreciated here!
Sage advice #1___ Don't buy shipped eggs at all if you can possibly avoid it. USPS (the only carrier licensed to handle eggs or live birds, BTW) likes to play football with them, whether they're clearly marked or not.

Sage advice #2___ If you feel you must have eggs shipped, call the seller and specify how you want the eggs packed. If the seller balks, buy your eggs elsewhere.

Sage advice #3___Candle the eggs before you set them. Detached air cells are not uncommon in shipped eggs.

Sage advice #4___ Read & understand Sally's various articles on the first page of this thread, or at the bottom of each of her posts, before you consider having eggs shipped.

Letting shipped eggs settle for 24 hours is a good practice

Best of luck, and welcome to the thread.

Not sure if using fedex ground was the smartest route for your supplier to go as I think most eggs are sent via USPS priority mail. Mine came from CT and were sent out just after Christmas. Alot will depend on how old the eggs were when they started there journey and how well they were packaged.
where were you born @Chaos18? I'm starting to be VERY LEARY of this shipment and have the wonderful, Jeff, from Papas Poultry (who I'm thinking we should have gone with first), pulling what he can between yesterday and today...to ship from Nor Cal tomorrow. With this breeder, I'm pretty sure she started gathering (from her cold, slow, hens) LAST WEEK. We were peppering her with all sorts of requests and tweaks to the order and I was afraid I was irritating her already... I never thought I'd have to question shipping already 5 day old fertile eggs across the entire country!

On the bright side- because there always is one, she wants to know our hatch rate, and basically said she'd send more, if needed....

I woke up to my son yelling "oh tootles" in my ear. Apparently Mon and dads bed is more comfortable to play video games in at 4:30 in the morning. Gonna be a long day,

Placerville, the same place as Thomas Kinkaid. If she's willing to send more if these ones don't make it that's usually a good sign. If the current batch doesn't make it you at least know how you want things to go for the next batch so hopefully they would be fresher.
