I have a chick with bright red umbilical cord attached to shell, unclosed abdomen. Chance of survival and what to do??

This may have already been answered.

Let the red vessel dry out and gently push the edges of the ventral opening together. This helps the natural mechanism to close the opening like a "purse string" after the yolk sack has been internised.

The dry vessel usually breaks off but can be cut if the shell is being dragged around.

If helping the opening to close up is not near compete, you can put a steri-strip across it to prevent yolk sac from falling out, but it usually does not need that. Having a small opening is fine as they just close with time.

The wafer thermostat seems to vary too much. 99.5 to 102 at top of egg. I do have a picture but it's not wanting to go with the message. I've tried three other times so if you get a bunch of them whoops!
