So m gonna upgrade incu ators. Ill keep this one as a back up i guess. Im not happy with my hatch rates.

I want one that has accurate digital display and thermostat that stays. At. The. Exact. Temp. Not this 4 degree fluctuations crap.
also i need a better hygrometer, and a better way to regulate it. More surface acrea for water exposure. So stackable shallow trays...

Should i make a bator or buy one? Im a farm girl so i can make just about anything from some old junk, lol.

Also....i have 16 vhivks that are 8 weeks old its like 13 degree tonight, they have a heat lamp so they will be ok right? Its a 250 watt...

Empty shells -
a valuable source of information click HERE

Advice

  • Judge the accuracy of pulling time and hatching conditions by crumbling empty shells in your fist and by checking the amount of meconium on the egg shells.
  • Check the height and manner of pipping, to judge whether weight loss during incubation was sufficient.
  • Check the inside of the empty shells for signs of insufficient weight loss during the first half of incubation (blood vessels not reaching until sharp end of egg).
  • Observe the inside of the empty shells for signs of overheating (excessively large and clearly visible blood vessels).
  • Use information obtained from assessing the empty shells in conjunction with other observations, to avoid hasty or incorrect conclusions.

Haven't the time to do a readback just yet, so I'll just jump in at the end of the thread. Here you go whites... these are some pics of the finished brooder. I think I'll be adding some rails along the bottom of the nursery to cut down on the shavings that are being scratched out.

Be careful; someone's liable to mistake you for a carpenter instead of an auto body man. How'd you like to take a road trip up north? I'll furnish the mat'l; you bring the tools

MAKE A COOLER BATOR!!! yep if it is low nuff to keep them warm! you have it VERY VERY securely hung and stuff so it dont swing if a chicken flys into it and it cant get hung up on anything?
For that matter, how cold hardy ARE chickens? What temps can they handle without getting weakened immune systems?
depends on the breed, do a google cold hardy chickens see if yours fit the bill
