I posted my own thread, but maybe I'll get some better and quicker answers here. I have two call ducklings trying to hatch. They both internally pipped 48+ hours ago. When I saw that they were internally pipped, I made an external pip for them since they usually can't do it on their own because of their short bills. Last night I went ahead and removed a little bit of shell around the egg to help them when they're ready to zip. I checked this morning and their veins are huge. I've assisted with several hatches, but I've never had to pip for one. Did I do something wrong that's causing them not to absorb the veins, or are they just taking their sweet time? I'm terrified that they're gonna die in the shell.
usually because there not ready. I found there not right after you help them out. I cant speak with ducks though.

Hey Sally. After I feed and water everybody Ill take an updated pic of one. There only 5 days old and have there wing feathers already. Growing fast.

Thanks everyone! I feel better now. I didn't expect them to be ready even 24 hours later, but now that it's going on 48 hours I was starting to really worry. This is the first time I've actually had any been able to get any to the point of external pip, so I'm really trying to keep the little guys alive.

I am a rather inexperienced hatcher myself.  I use an incubator warehouse incubator.  The first 2 hatches went well.  The second 2 hatches were horrible, with several late losses (day 18+ to post hatch).   This incubator does have a horizontal tray for turning eggs.   I had always candled at day 7, 14, & 18, but I had never marked air cells (oops) but I started getting wrong end pips.  I think I may have not sanitized the incubator appropriately and I never realized there was a plug on top of the incubator I needed to remove to improve ventilation.  I've not used any other incubators and I have learned so much by participating in these hatch alongs.  I'm looking forward to Saturday evening for my day 7 candling.  I'm working with BCM eggs and the person I got them from only has a 50% hatch rate - but hopefully I can see if interventions helped by reducing day 18+ losses.

How was the hatch rate with the eggs you won?  I hope it was okay

I had 11 out of 15 hatch with the eggs I won. I did have to help two out that pipped the wrong end. I'll be sure to sanitize really really well this time. I also wonder if I put the dividers that go in between the eggs too close? I looked at my manual again and it said to keep 5-10mm of space on the sides of the eggs.

Mine are packed in sometimes. Dont really think that matters too much.

Ravyn can help you if she catches this. I know zilch about ducks.
