It sounds to me like your ready. Just dive in!!! Practice eggs from Trader Joes if you like that way it's only 3 bucks out of pocket. And they hatch well.
Unless, of course the TJ near you does not have fertile eggs! I made my very first pilgrimage to the TJ in my state, specifically to check out the egg status. What a disappointment! But, I was impressed with the store, not so impressed with the yuppiness of it. There are a couple of health food stores near me that sell fertile eggs, one even has duck eggs by the 6 pack. I may buy some, just for grins and giggles!

Same here on growing season. My brother and I raised several grafted varieties one year. Did super well got some real beauties gave away pounds of tomatoes. Very next year a bust. Going to try to get them started earlier this year. I've a Chinese variety that did really well last year more shaped like a paste but cherry like in flavor. Going to go with it again hope it does as well. Was setting when others wouldn't. Brother did not like it because it was too small. About 2" long. Better than nothing and no waste.
Does your friend like the Maxifort variety for rootstock?

I don't know..he just mentioned that he had them. He does some grafting. I'm always trying different kinds of tomatoes and peppers though.
But last year I had to give in to the fact that early girls were the best production tomatoes.
Still will have all the others but early girls are the ticket.
Need to find a good early paste tomato
My wife makes all her own sauces.

Definitely a yuppie place and not all have fertile eggs bummer on the trip.

We have a local store here that sells eggs from different towns people. They do sell duck eggs which I'm assuming are fertile. Just don't know the mix.

The only light I've ever used was for heat when I had a few month-old chicks in a fairly large brooder coop out back; was concerned that the body heat from only 3 chicks wouldn't be enough for them.  Other than that, I'm pretty much of a "let Mother Nature do what she does best" kind of guy. Grown birds, depending on breed, don't need artificial heat to stay healthy, as long as they can get out of drafts & stay dry. The only exception, IMO, would be if there were too few birds to generate sufficient body heat. I have 6 RSL's in a 3'4 insulated coop where temps get down into single digits overnight, and they do just fine. Egg production does go down in the winter when natural light is shortest, but I believe they benefit from the rest, just as in nature.

There you have my 2 cents worth of input; use it or not as you wish.

X2 I agree and don't run lights for the same reason. I was hoping to give @country lovinsome info on using lights.
Besides the roosters wake up here early enough without being kicked out of bed. :lau

With our short days, and my work schedule, I don't have much choice. Need some light to see both before and after work, but I find the lower wattage in the evening isn't as much of a shock as turning on the lights suddenly at twilight.

Good morning

Sauces are awesome. I've a good baked tomato soup that I make up when I have enough. If the weather gives me a bunch.
Really strange how one year a variety will do well and the very next year it doesn't

And I don't have the cold weather you have. Next month I'll be getting them started.

Good morning Phil, sorry I missed responding last night :frow
And good morning Whites! Keep running your mouth, everyone's experiences contribute here at Sally's house. :highfive:

Phil, we have similar growing seasons, and I experiment with different tomatoes each season as well found two early variety star fire and beef steak that work good here, but I do experiment each year! Kinda like my backyard mix experiments with my chickens! :gig
