Same here on growing season. My brother and I raised several grafted varieties one year. Did super well got some real beauties gave away pounds of tomatoes. Very next year a bust. Going to try to get them started earlier this year. I've a Chinese variety that did really well last year more shaped like a paste but cherry like in flavor. Going to go with it again hope it does as well. Was setting when others wouldn't. Brother did not like it because it was too small. About 2" long. Better than nothing and no waste.
Does your friend like the Maxifort variety for rootstock?

I don't know..he just mentioned that he had them. He does some grafting. I'm always trying different kinds of tomatoes and peppers though.
But last year I had to give in to the fact that early girls were the best production tomatoes.
Still will have all the others but early girls are the ticket.
Need to find a good early paste tomato
My wife makes all her own sauces.

For that you need some good garlic, some chili,( peperoncino) and italian basil the famous Basilico! Mmmm ce gustoso!

With our short days, and my work schedule, I don't have much choice. Need some light to see both before and after work, but I find the lower wattage in the evening isn't as much of a shock as turning on the lights suddenly at twilight.

:idunno

Lighting before and after work here is an issue as well just not nearly as yours.

You should have seen the looks on the hens faces when I turned the lights on for the first time with a practice run. All 14 turned in unison from their roost too look at it like what the heck. :lau wished I had a picture of that.

I now just let the natural light do its thing and wear a headlight to feed.

Good morning Phil, sorry I missed responding last night

Phil, we have similar growing seasons, and I experiment with different tomatoes each season as well found two early variety star fire and beef steak that work good here, but I do experiment each year! Kinda like my backyard mix experiments with my chickens!

I love this! We used to live in a townhouse where our only yard was a 30 X 10 patio. I love growing tomatoes too (@sally sun- something else to distract me during lockdown!)! One year, I grew 54 different types....all in CONTAINERS! My husband called it Jurassic Park. This past September we moved to our dream house on a half acre- we're in Southern California, 15 miles inland from Malibu- 1/2 acre here is equivalent to 20 for the rest of the country! Lol. Everyone keeps bragging (a bit prematurely I might say) about the garden I'll have, considering all my 'land'. I have to admit, I'm having a bit of stage fright! I can grow anything in a pot, but the ground is another story! Such pressure!!! Lol. I, too, put a hefty seed order in to add to the seeds I saved from last year- my artichoke crowns went in two weeks ago and the garlic and onions 3 weeks ago...not bad for picking random places in the yard! We need to add raised bed building to our building of the supercoop plan!

What hubby doesn't seem to realize is the emergent need for both to get done ASAP!!! Give me your top 10 tomatoes, @LittleLakePhil!
Mine have been:

2. Black Krim
3. Cusalito
4. Carmello
5. Hillbilly

Growing tomatoes is about like growing chickens...once you start....

LOL

I know what you mean! I have over 60 varieties of tomato seeds. Have you checked out tomatofest or baker creek? They have wonderful varieties and they send an extra seed packet with your order.

Y'all ever try Big Boys or Better Boys? I like 'em both; make for a good-sized sammich with a little mayo, pepper, cheese, and of course bacon
