Well every year I say I'm not going to spend as much on the garden....well I just put my tomato seed order in.

$50 just in tomato seeds....I'm a sucker for trying new varieties....last year I had 48 plants total. That's probably a bit overkill for two people.

I love growing tomatoes though.

Pepper seeds are next.....

Now I got to get the rest of the garden seeded ordered. I use different catalogs for each varieties.

I love this! We used to live in a townhouse where our only yard was a 30 X 10 patio. I love growing tomatoes too (sally sun- something else to distract me during lockdown!)! One year, I grew 54 different types....all in CONTAINERS! My husband called it Jurassic Park. This past September we moved to our dream house on a half acre- we're in Southern California, 15 miles inland from Malibu- 1/2 acre here is equivalent to 20 for the rest of the country! Lol. Everyone keeps bragging (a bit prematurely I might say) about the garden I'll have, considering all my 'land'. I have to admit, I'm having a bit of stage fright! I can grow anything in a pot, but the ground is another story! Such pressure!!! Lol. I, too, put a hefty seed order in to add to the seeds I saved from last year- my artichoke crowns went in two weeks ago and the garlic and onions 3 weeks ago...not bad for picking random places in the yard! We need to add raised bed building to our building of the supercoop plan!

What hubby doesn't seem to realize is the emergent need for both to get done ASAP!!! Give me your top 10 tomatoes, @LittleLakePhil !
Mine have been:
1. Jaune Flamme
2. Black Krim
3. Cusalito
4. Carmello
5. Hillbilly
6. Lillian's Yellow
7. Frosted Green Grape
8. Aunt Ruby's
9. Blondkopfchen
10. Sungold (kid's favorite

Growing tomatoes is about like growing chickens...once you start....

LOL

It's TOMATO MATH. I usually set up about 30-50 different varieties (the ones I like are likely different because of the hot dry climate). I grow mine with mild neglect to ferret out which are hardiest and don't need babying in the hot dry weather. Best performers last year were Iraqi varieties from Baker Creek - Ninevah and Baswra (SP?). Matt's Wild Cherry always does really well - it's related to wild tomates from Mexico. Cherokee Green is a new one and is AMAZING! Just sayin'.
Mark the air cells first

Let's say the turner turns left to right
Make sure the "dips" if it has any saddles, are facing so that when the eggs turn, it doesn't "roll" that aircell.
I'm not at home or id get ya pichers.
Hope this helps

Read shipped eggs section of Hatching 101

Will ask in my update as well, but could I ask for clarification (as I'm about to start turning my saddled air cell eggs) - turn parallel or perpendicular to the dip? @Sally Sunshine @LocalYokel

Also, Local, I confirmed on the Naked Neck thread with a couple folks - per them POL is often 20 weeks (as early as 19 weeks, some at 21 weeks).
I've not fished for bull reds, but they're on my bucket list. I like the idea that you can fish for them with regular bass tackle.

I love fishing for reds! They fight so hard!!!!!

increased it to about 50% I never go under 65% during lockdown, with close to perfect air cells I go 70
temp spikes are bad at those numbers
always turn more than that when possible

TURNING ITS IMPORTANT
TURN MORE THAN 3 times a day!! post #22178
UNDERSTANDING the CAM ~chorio-allantoic membrane post #22178 post #22187 post #22229

As I will now be hand turning my shipped eggs, does this mean that while I'm home, I should try to turn every hour when awake? Is there an issue with regularity of turning vs having periods (e.g., while at work) when they are turned less frequently?
Puff pastry with gizzard Raghu

Chicken liver in red wine

Chicken hart and spleen stew

Chicken stock made from chicken bones

Benny I really need these recipes...
Can you give chickens a bath?
Also how do dry them off? A hairdyer? Isn't that too much heat?
May I add that one should *never* bathe a sick chicken? It might seem obvious to some people, but there have been quite a few posts where people have bathed their sick birds and the bird died. Please, bathe only birds that are healthy!

Caveat - if there are wounds from an attack, and the chicken is no longer in shock, hydrotherapy on the wounds is very good and improves healing. No soap, just warm water on the skin/wounds. (This is also what two different vets told me was the very best thing I could do for my chicken recovering from a dog attack, and not to use ANYTHING topical - just do hydrotherapy as frequently as was practical to speed healing). But you MUST not let them get chilled (esp. if they've been stressed like my boy was) - I used a blow dryer on low.
Kristin!!! @Fire Ant Farm its bubblinggggggg

Be sure to have it in a big enough container, or you'll end up like this:

I just skipped almost 700. Did the duck hatch? Localyokel did you have a better day?
Sally nice Chickies.
Evening everyone
dax how is yer ankle, kat never came back to tell us. and the other one not either

My ankle is sore today because I moved from the big boot to a fancy lace up strap under and another around bootie like thing that goes in my shoe. I will have to take it easy tomorrow except for cleaning the coop to get ready for returning to work.
@LocalYokel how's the quail?
Evening @kwhites634

I hate to be a party pooper, but for some reason I'm feeling a little tired. I'm not used to being able to get outside and work an entire day. Spring's around the corner, so I'd better get used to it. As for now, I'm calling it a day. I hope everyone has a great night, and I'll chat with you cats later!

Good night, everyone!!!
