I have heard it isn't the best incubator but I will never turn down a free chicken gift! We have 22 hens and 5 roosters, and more pullets growing in our brooder. Our hens are getting back in the swing of laying after their winter molt, so I'm excited to do a test hatch!

What are some good thermometers to look at? We don't want to spend too much, as if we don't do well with hatching we can't afford to buy a nicer incubator at the moment so it would sit unused for several years.

Some folks swear by an LG! I would just set it up, get some thermometers and test it out for a few days. You can get the two dollar aquarium thermometers at wally world that are just about as accurate as any I have seen. If you haven't already done so, you should check out Sally's threads on the first page, especially hatching 101. Just hang around here, there are all kinds of great folks with experience that can help you out.

Don't sweat it... it happens to everyone! Always at the most inopportune time, but it happens.  I don't know much about American Kempo, but if you ever get the opportunity to meet Grand Master Jack Hogan, take it. He has (along with a couple others) unlocked the original secrets of Ryukyu Kempo. It's nothing like the watered down stuff you find in most dojos... 

I will look. My instructor is under Brian Duffy who was a student and successor of Grand Master Ed Parker the founder of American Kenpo.
