I so love my hubby, I can't see well at night so he is making the 30 minute drive to the post office hub so I can pick up my first set of bielefelder eggs.

 I have yet to dip and egg in antibiotic!

Kat knows her antibiotics!  and with these eggs as they are, Lord knows they need all our help

I've heard that you can clean eggs with oxine diluted with water and its supposed to kill more germs and pathogens than bleach can.

I've also heard of a tylan bath for eggs though that one was supposed to prevent the spread of MG and required heating the eggs up then plunging them into in ice bath of tylan solution for 15 minutes. I tried it once after an MG scare in my flock. Most of the eggs did hatch. I'll have to look and see if I can find the page that had this info on it. I know it's not what you were looking for but you just reminded me of it.

Spent a little more time this evening on the new pen. Got the three doors so they will latch shut. Just need to cut some pop doors and install ramps up to the coop(s). I want to get through soon, because as soon as the nights get above freezing (upper 30's and low 40's), the chicks are moving out of the basement. I would move them sooner, but the basement remains a steady 58F-60F and I don't want to risk losing them to hypothermia.

I know I've shown them before, but here are the coop doors today:

I didn't realize just how big the 9 week old BR's were getting until I (attempted to) measured them. I also noticed they can stand flat-footed and peck the wire at the top of the brooder... which is 24" from the floor. Here is a pic of them standing normally behind the end of an 18" zip tie (camera level with top end):

Love it Joey!!

thanks

@Sally Sunshine

That little Silkie/Cochin accident is just the sweetest little thing and cute as a button. May have to keep her around.

awwwww I hope your air cells fared better than the duckies I have

Putting my eggs on lock down. I have 23 eggs left in the incubator. Air cells still look a bit small, but all have grown - some a lot more than others since day 14. ...I left room for improvement in record keeping and will weigh eggs next time.

I've removed my turner (not just turned it off), and I have added/layered paper towels to hold water to try to help get the humidity up. Vent is still out.

1) Can the eggs get wet, or will that cause problems?

2) My eggs are laying horizontal. Should I be putting them in a carton so they don't roll or be placing them vertical, air cell side up? I didn't catch all the discussion on this - I have always kept them horizontal in the past...but my problems of late seem to occur after lockdown...
