Thanks @Saris and @RubyNala97 ; it's really horrible to think someone's out there - just metres from where we're watching TV and they could mess with our chooks!

But I WILL NOT let it stop me from keeping them; I just love chickens! There's a few AC breeders over here, so these are hatching eggs. The first lot I stuffed up and got the humidity wrong = dead chicks in shell. The second weren't fertile, so here's hoping for third time lucky! I got one from the first round - a little roo I think. AMAZED how fast he's growing!
I am still curious how they catch criminals as this has me bothered ! @GreenRunner

Hello everyone! I hope I can still join in! I currently have 2 bators running for hatches due 11/20 and 11/22 with a total of 14 eggs set. I got a great deal on a Brinsea mini for $25 bucks and it is at full capacity with 8 shipped black copper Marans eggs and the hygrometer. I am hoping for some quality breeding stock out of this hatch to add to my existing blue copper breeding prospects. We really also wanted to hatch some from our existing mixed flock too- so I was able to talk my husband into letting me get a Hovabator on sale :) and each family member chose a hen we wanted a baby from. So we have 6 in there. They are all covered by our silver laced Wyandotte rooster. So there's a slw egg, 2 barred rocks eggs (Chicks should be black sex-links), 2 Easter eggers eggers, and a black sex link's egg. Should be a fun mix! :)
WELCOME TO THE THREAD!!!
@JandTRanch
Wow Great breeds in the bators!!! I hope you have a great hatch! Marans are tough to loose weight during incubation always fun to hatch those nice big chicks too! when are they due?

WHAT YOU CAN DO to save overheated or cold eggs!
What Temperatures Kill In An Incubator?

WHAT If the Power Goes Off?
BE PREPARED & HAVE A PLAN!

Hatching Eggs 101 - BackYard Chickens Community

If the electric goes off, you have to do whatever you have to do to keep them warm, if you have to take them to someone that has electric or take them to the car to run them off the car battery. just be careful dont jiggle them too much, the older they are the more tolerant they will be.

ALWAYS have a plan buy an electric power loss alarm!
It will waken you at night, simply plug it into an outlet and it sounds when you loose it! and its cheap! Worst case cover the bator with blankets!!!

This can be done by placing a large cardboard box or blankets over the top of small incubators for additional insulation. To warm the eggs, place candles in jars, light them and place the jars under the box that covers the incubator. Be careful not to put any flammable material closer than a foot from the top of the candles. The heat from the candles can easily keep the eggs above 90°F until the power returns.

Embryos have survived at temperatures below 90°F for up to 18 hours. You should continue to incubate the eggs after the outage; then candle them 4 to 6 days later to check for further development or signs of life. If, after 6 days, you do not see life or development in any of the eggs, then terminate incubation. Most of the time, a power outage will delay hatching by a few days and decrease the hatchability to 40-50 percent.

A full incubator of eggs
always helps maintain a steady temperature
even if it’s not good for your chicken math!

I think perhaps more stones are in order for heat sinks
a nice full layer on the bottom and just using cups for added humidity on top of wire until lockdown would probably hold amazingly well

I am still curious how they catch criminals as this has me bothered ! @GreenRunner
Honestly, I don't think they do. When it's small crimes like this they just don't care. I think it's down to a) perpetrator losing interest or b) perpetrator escalating their crimes to a larger level so eventually they get caught. It REALLY sucks.

Hello! This is my second hatch of Marans this year. The first group was 6 under a rookie broody hen in July. She hatched 5/6 eggs ( all developed but one died during the hatch) and boy were they big vigorous chicks! This group is due 11/20 in the Brinsea and looking great so far! I spot checked 6 random eggs yesterday and all 6 had growing chicks and rock solid air cells! I'm going to do a full candling and mark air cells on Monday so hopefully I will have a good update then.

Thanks so much for your excellent and thorough hatching eggs 101 thread. I have read it several times and it has been a great help to me!

I betcha if you catch the guy on camera & drop it on the cops' desk, they'd almost HAVE to do something about it!

@Sally Sunshine , You use a coolerbator right? I thinking about possibly replacing my LG incubator with a CB at some point.
We have hatched thousands of chicks in our coolerbators at this point,

with the two light, wafer thermostat system! anyone can make either of these,

and I added images and info to help you make them!

How come no one will chat with me

are you on a AP of BYC or laptop? when you respond to someone, use the "QUOTE" under the post you want to comment on hit the quote tab and if you want to quote and reply to several people at once, keep reading and as you read hit the ""mulit for multi quoting and then after your done hit reply and then answer everyone in one post!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Byc is awesome. I'm thinking I will fit right in here. I've been talking to the "babies" in the incubator every time I turn the eggs lol.

So, I was reading about calibrating thermometers and I have issues.

1. How do you calibrate a brinsea mini??? I dont even know where the thermometer is!

2. My coolerbator thermometers (all 3) can't be submerged. How do I calibrate?

That's all for now!
now now! lol I told you the links were in the article silly, but I read on and see you figured it all out. Glad they came in ok, HAVE you marked air cells since they came in? how do they look vs what I marked since I sent them?

Just had my temp fall to 93 degrees but only for a few moments (15 mins), im ok right? On day 3
if for a few your fine!

It is so hard! I'm on day 21 and they are moving and chirping but no pips yet. The suspense is killing me! Stay away stay away stay a...oh they are calling me to watch with their little peeps!

awwwwww
GOOOO chickiessss!!!!

Mine just spiked to 105 in my still air
I hate this Little Giant incubator I just had another temperature spike of 110
ugggggggg again? is the adjustment on the bator that touchy?

Just looked in my bator, got 12 eggs in there that are not due to hatch for 24 hours but 4 are piped and I can hear them peeping this is great, I love it........going back to the bator to watch

sweetness!!! here come babies!!!

GAH I'm back! Somehow this tab got closed and replaced when I updated my computer and I fell behind!

Husband called the dishwasher repair guy and got a call from the internet people, so we've got someone coming in tomorrow to fix my dishwasher and another guy coming in next Friday to install the new router. I also found a few pallets that have been sitting around the warehouse that I'm allowed to use for making a new coop! :D
frow.gif
MORE BABIES TO COME RIGHT??? hahhahhahhahhaaa

Ok- so I think I have one of my thermometers calibrated. Had it in a bag with ice and the water was starting to get "slushy". Temp read 32.2°F so pretty close! Used that to check the Brinsea and it is 1° cooler than its reading. The uglybator is spot on. (Yeah!)

In regards to the shipped eggs, I tried to candle some, but was NOT feeling confident so I have decided to leave them for 48 hours without turning and then try again. What are your thoughts? Good idea? @Sally sunshine
@venymae
your flashlight cannot see into the air cells to see if air cells move or not? thats all you need to check? and then outline the air cells with a pencil, number then, write down their number on paper and if they are in good shape or if they have a loose air cell or any other noticable things about the egg.... and if the air cell rolls end to end of the egg trash them, because I said so, dont waste time on them.

This should have done when you unwrapped them! and then not candled again until day 7 sweetness!!! NOW CHANGE OF PLANS....... when did you set them your time zone..... and they are in a turner not turning correct? at what heat? and what of the serama they are in the little machine?
Day 21 here

One has hatched

and I'm hearing a peep from one. Total of ten went into lock down and all have horrible air cells.

there is a broody hatch along I used to belong to....

Hello everyone!

Whew! Just read this from page 1 on, what a terrific thread! Thank you @Sally Sunshine! Sorry you were not well, but glad you're better now! So many great tips here, not just tips...guidance, support, encouragement ......ENABLING!!!!!

I'm new to incubating too, but probably won't do any until next year, I'm trying to read and learn all I can in advance. (Still need to read incubating 101) By spring or next summer I will (hopefully
fl.gif
) be converting a wine cooler ($50-CL) into a nice big 'bator (Will be studying the incubator builds too). Before I do that I need to finish building my coop and run (in my spare time. Ha!
wink.png
) But you know, winters coming...or rather our cold to the bone rainy season in the Williamette Valley....so on those days it's just TOO cold and wet to work outside retrofitting a cooler into a bator might be just the ticket.
Looking at all these adorable baby chicks and handsome Roo and hen pictures makes me just ache to get some.
hide.gif
.....but I promised myself, no chickies until they could be safely kept, so......
idunno.gif
I'll just look at all yours for now

Thank you and your very welcome!!! Wine coolers make awesome bators too! just a bit harder to work with but same end results! Glad your with us, you need help with the build let us know! Show us as you start your build, many are thinking about starting to build as well, so feel free to post you build to inspire!
thumbsup.gif

Can I play too? I'm on day 7! First time with shipped eggs.....I'm nervous!
of course!!!! your right with a bunch with us on day 7! welcome!!! dont be nervous!!!
have you calibrated thermometers, and you know that humidity is not a set number its only used to get the proper weight loss in the egg?
how have your eggs arrived? air cells looking good?
what breeds have you purchased?
I have legbar and a few serama in together, never suggest doing this though.

Thank you! I ordered some eggs off eBay and at day 7 candling 11/12 are alive and growing strong, 1 died early, no veins, clearish with an incomplete blood ring, I left it in just in case, my last 2 hatches I had moments of oops I thought you were dead....sorry you are now.... I'm trying to avoid that this time. So I'm leaving everyone in until lockdown unless someone starts oozing or weeping.....I need the next 14 days to go by quickly, I wanna see little fuzzy butts!
oh here are some answers LOL
do you have a good candler?
