Very nice! I need to learn how to build schtuff. I could use a few buildings like that!
Just get started. A tape measure, saw, drill gun, screws, lumber, a plan in your head and voila - you're on your way.
Other things like a level and framing square are helpful.

Ant's air cells were too big too early. Had to slow the growth on them so the chicks would have enough room to move into hatching positions. Too little humidity when the chick pips/zips will make the membrane tough. If you've ever pulled an egg to assist, you'll know that the membrane dries and turns white then brown very quickly. It's drying out and becomes rubbery, which can be nearly impossible for a chick to tear though...

One egg too many.

Is it the same temperature throughout?

Sometimes I get lucky and my posts are legible. Other times... not so much. As I've said before, sometimes it's nearly impossible to decipher my cryptic writings, and even I can't make sense of them. You caught me on a good night...

Same here.
I was once an award winning writer and I'm sometimes appalled when I look back at the blather I wrote - mostly grammar and punctuation issues.

How about you just stop messing with them. I seriously can't believe you opened 4 eggs when day 21 wasn't even over yet. You owe Sally and everyone who has had to watch you ignore advice an apology. If I were your mother I would take away your bator and all your chickens. You are burning bridges young man and if you can't follow advice given to you you should stop asking for it.
X2. I don't touch eggs till day 23. I once did an eggtopsy on an egg I was sure was on day 25 only to find a live chick about to hatch. The machete did it in.

AIR SAC -------- NOT THE SAME AS AN AIR CELL!!!!!
Semantics. Thanks for posting the diagram of a respiratory system.
Perhaps if one doesn't know anatomy and associated nomenclature, it would be best to study before hatching eggs.

well, still heck no I'm not poking at them.the bator is closed
Set it and forget it. If your temp and humidity are correct, there's nothing else you should do.

Some girls want diamonds for Valentine's Day... I'm happy with a Super Coop, and Mama Garden, plotted and planned by Handsome Devil (referred to as HD). I know I've talked about these plans before, so, forgive me for repeating... Now it's finally happening!!! The first picture is the outline of the raised beds we'll build at the end of the run. Hubby designed the U shape (12' down, 9' across and 3.5' wide (our tractor is 3' wide), with an extra 3' x 4' bed in the middle.

This second pic is a panoramic taken from the inside of where the run goes...we are building the space to the left out for the coop 18ft x 8ft. It is the back of the girl's playhouse. We will tap into the electricity so I can build a brooder and hospital cage above the nesting boxes. We are pouring a slab for ease of cleaning and security. Half of the open space above the wall, to the left, will be greenhouse glass (for light and rain (should we EVER get any!) protection)), with the rest hardware cloth, where it will come across the front, framing it all in and giving them protection at night... We are making the "people door" a Dutch door I can just open the bottom half of to let the girls out. We will mount that old wagon wheel (propped up against the wall) flat on a post for a fun roost, along with a ladder roost.

The posts will be 4.5' high with hogwire. I am moving the blood orange and fig trees out of the center, into the run spaces...more protection from our overhead visitors. We are planting 2 avocados "inside" the run space as well- 1 along each wall, for protection and to screen our neighbors yards. Outside the run fence I'm planting lavender and rosemary bushes for pollinators, chicken smell camouflage and rodent deterrent. We are adding a gate at the corner from where I took the pano, to be able to close off to use for new bird integration, breeding and/or broody hens... We are adding a small 5'x4' coop at the mandarin tree end too.

I am keeping my "Bielefelder Family" over in the area the big girls have their coop now. I am planning for the big girls to move to super coop when these babies are ready to go out...just so everyone is on new territory.

Lastly, we will fill in the open space with polished gravel and put a picnic table and benches in the middle, along with my favorite adirondack chairs. This is the best Valentine present EVER! I have a feeling it is also bday, Mother's Day, anniversary , and likely Christmas...for a very long time!

Nice plan. Even if you have lots of gardening experience and with extensive planning, you'll end up making changes over time.
I've been gardening and farming my whole life. I've moved my asparagus and strawberry beds 4 times in the last 12 years or more.
I'm constantly making pen and housing changes.

The Chinese don't waste much time or effort when they caponize...

I wish I was fast at stuff like that. Everything takes me a long time.

Their parts are on the inside near their back. Very unlike mammals.

47 low 55 high here RAIN RAIN RAIN
Been snowing since early morning. 3 inches coming on top of the dusting we had a week ago that never left cause it's been so cold. Getting above freezing for the first time tomorrow or Tuesday. Just saw a forecast for Friday. A high of 70. That's just weird for Feb..

Is it possible to graft one specie onto another, ie. a pear to, say, an apple, to get 2 fruits from 1 tree?
Absolutely. I think it is Stark Brothers that sell a 5 in 1 tree.

Same with my truck. Hadn't been started since Tuesday, but fired right up.

My old Chevy truck starts every time...I being a mechanic stuff the largest battery I can in my vehicles sometime creatively...my wife's old Grand Prix has 240k miles on it....still started....thank God I wouldn't have wanted to go out this morning.

@Phil http://wholefedhomestead.com/what-temperature-can-a-duck-survive/ this is interesting from someone who had their ducks survive the super cold.
that article was great thank you......my ducks are khaki Campbell...not as big as pekin...but supposed to be very cold hardy....the straw igloos I made seem to give them a safe place to huddle......they look totally fine....thank God for that too.

Chicken canoe...I can write very well too...when I want...but on here don't care so much...also this dam phone changes my words all the time....always having to edit...:he

Yay is right, feel like its still gonna be weeks before its done, I have a pond fence to finish first. Who know tho, I have trouble keeping still.

I'm sure it'll be done before you know it.

Saw you were thinking of caponizing and that you have someone to show you. That's great I've tried it with dead roosters a couple times now. Highly recommend doing that first. Let's just say my first attempt would have killed the rooster anyways. I'm still going to attempt it live but all eligible roosters are in the freezer.

I'm the one who will be trying to caponize. I hope to practice one dead roos first. I just need to get a dead roo......
The first 2 I did a couple of years ago turned out good. Not very good luck since then. Either I get the vein or I miss some of it.

I guess just practice practice practice

So how long can you leave an egg in the incubator without it exploding. I can not see real well into the marans eggs so I don't want to take them out.

A while.

help anyone
Dont touch

WHAT DO I DO
NO TOUCHY LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Semantics. Thanks for posting the diagram of a respiratory system.

I concur! I've read so much before incubating. I wanted to have as much knowledge as I could, it's how I do anything. I smother myself in all the info I can get.

I guess I need to reword. They are on day 7 and can't really see that is going on if they are clear will they explode if I just leave them in the whole 21 Days
One of the ones I left in was DIS & didn't explode, so I wouldn't think a clear would...nothing inside to start decomposition, so no gas...JMO

When I first started incubating I'd did not know anything about candleing. All eggs made it 21
Days. I guess I was lucky they never exploded on me. I've found nest in the field around here with old eggs in them. The explode really well when thrown against a tree. Make sure you are ten feet or more away if you find yourself doing this.
