Hello friends, am glad to be apart of you. Am Ugandan from Africa
Started back yard chicken last September 2015. The project is interesting. The birds are laying eggs. But they all insist on using one nest so I have found hatching difficult.
Most of the eggs are wasted. Can I incubate using the cheapest means possible.
Thanks
Rhoda

Thank you Sally for the extra info on unhatched eggs. I do have one egg without a pip so I will read all of this just in case. It is only day 20 and chicks only started hatching at 6 pm last night so I am trying to be patient as I have been reading on this thread for the last few days.

Also thanks for mentioning your rooster and frostbite. One of mine got frostbite yesterday. It was 16 below with 39 below wind chill. He was not exposed to the wind but he has big wattles and being inexperienced I did not realize they were dragging in the water when he drank...

Quote: will do! she did an egtopsy on the other two, one silkie was already dead cause it was mal and couldnt pip, and the other one was marans and that was early DIS she said day 10. how is that for a cool kid! love her!

Quote: me too!! thank you, was hoping for another day off, but of course early dismissal!

OK, so a perfect example of why you shouldn't help eggs hatch

last night when I was candling my last two eggs to see if they were good, I realized that the one had been oipped internally for a while but never made the external pip so I made a tiny pup for it and put it back. The other hatched on its own overnight but the one that I had pipped only made the hole a tiny bit bigger and had turned around in the egg. It was still alive and moving but not getting anywhere so I started opening the egg a little to investigate. I found that it was ready to come out. All vessels were died up. Here, the poor thing has a deformed cross beak and never would've hatched on its own. I'll try to get a pic layer but it's top break, on the one side is almost like a cleft lip

I gal bad for the little one. I may have to cull it. One of those ones I never should've helped

Sorry. I say that all the time.

Looks like you've got your very own in-house "Grasshopper" going there. Good to see she's so interested
