"This condition is attributed to poor conditions in the setter or hatcher. When humidity is set too high, many chicks hatch with an overly large belly, causing them to struggle to leave the shell. As the overheated chick thrusts with its folded legs against the shell, it will - in its bid to be free of its shell as quickly as possible - often thrust too violently, causing damage to its hocks in the process."

love you Kat!

FWIW, I've had a couple of fat bellied chicks with red hocks that also had splay legs and curled toes. Left untreated, this led to slipped tendons.

No such thing as too much, I for one love it when ya give a nice long post as an answer instead of a one-liner! :hugs
I gotta know WHY something happens as it does, I don't like just knowin it DOES. That's why I appriciate it so much. :lau

Ok, so you want me to report "red hocks", my apologies, ok...I've never seen one before, are the hocks still red when they are dead after being piled upon?
no reporting to me! I was just asking you if you did an assessment

! you need to get to know me better, you ask and you shall receive answers. this is an incubation thread, and a very detailed information thread, we dont just tell people what to do, we all try to share a bit of what we know with each other in an attempt to explain WHY . Theres has not been many people that weigh eggs and have good hatches, you are on at the best time for everyone! I simply ask that you share some of your incubation in a bit more detail with them.

Another thing I will say AGAIN!!

THE CANDLE DAYS 7 14 18  ARE NOT SET IN STONE!!!

Candle 3 eggs every other day or so AFTER day 10 and follow the air cells a bit CLOSER visually!!  You will find you have more time to catch issues and adjust humidity!!

Can anyone tell me why mine are alive and thriving at lockdown and then 1-2 days later 1/2 always die without internally pipping? I wash my hands, I handle them carefully. I do move them from an auto turner and forced air bator to a still air bator (no turner of course)???
any suggestions?? Humidity? I up the Humidity to 70-75%. ???
This is for my duck and my chicken eggs, they both quit with 2 days left to hatch. I dont know what I am doing wrong.

Ahem.....

That info IS ALREADY together in a post Russ, I will remind you that you did ASK "Why would I check chick hocks after hatch? I count chicks that die within 3 days of hatch as "late deaths". If you'd like me to report splays, I can do that" so I pulled the information for you. Why wouldn't you assess chicks and shells?

We all realize incubation not only hatches a chick but also effects the life of the chick, many forget that issue.
Before I met you I never even though about inspecting hatch debris. Now I inspect every shell!
