We had 7 quail peeps born the night before Thanksgiving and 7 more hatched Thanksgiving night. That's almost a 50% hatch rate if my math is right-out of 30 eggs. But as always it disappoints me to still see those other eggs sitting in there. We had problems this time keeping our humidity levels even. This was the first time we've incubated in Winter with our heat in the house on so with every check, we had to add more water all the way through lock down.I am thinking that might be why we only had 14 hatches. I'm am eternal optimist and will give them extra days full well knowing it's time to clean up the incubator and get on with it. So we've 2 brooders going, both with 14 peeps each in them now as we have 14 of the 17 we hatched for the Halloween Hatch-a-Long. We've got to build another pen, bc it will be time to get our Halloween peeps outside soon. That probably will be it for us now til Spring.
the coal stove makes some major changes here as well. I am learning to make changes here as well. We have to adapt every hatch in this house, I swear even summer is driving me insane!

What an avy

Good After morning everyone!!! I just candled for day 14 with my silly little homemade bator. Out of 13 eggs, I have 3 clears, which happen to be all my pure Delaware eggs. 10 are swimming and growing. Even the one I thought I had lost. So far so good. Fingers crossed for further success.
You're doing great... only a few days to go!

I can't believe I'm four days away from lock down. Very nervous about it but thinking I will learn a lot from this and be able to build a better unit. I need to reread my notes and I guess just pray for the best!!!
And, you're doing this without a thermostat? You go girl!

Hi Everybody! I'm new to the thread. Never hatched anything, ever, in my life.

I read Sally's first two posts and was like...

I'll definitely lurk...and before long ask some questions. Mostly I'll try to read so I don't ask annoying dumb question.

But I will probably ask some questions if I ever take the incubation plunge, cause I just like to talk to people and make friends!

Thanks! Debbie
Welcome, Debbie. Be prepared for an addiction to slowly creep up on you and take over! Lots of ways to get into incubation, going all the way from stupid inexpensive (um... that would be me!) to bust the budget and create family discord expensive. Once you've held a warm egg in your hand, and watched that wonderful little creation dancing around inside that shell, you'll never want to let a season pass without incubating.

Not necessarily. I'd still give it a shot... if I was looking to expand my flock, and if I had room and the equipment to brood chicks in the winter, and if I was willing to accept the risk of winter hatching/brooding... we often loose power here for days at a time in the winter. (IMO, not having any studies to back it up, of course...) eggs getting chilled early on, may go on to develop and hatch ok. Then again... at risk of being stoned by this group of addicts... it would be just as easy to pitch those eggs and wait till spring, then start a batch!!
