grab one or two and candle quickly to check for internal pips and life, be sure to either mist the side of the bator or use a damp clothe to wipe the inside of the bator to bring the humidity right back up. dont leave the bator open, and dont carelessly drop and egg. candle and get it back in.  are you sure your temps were not too low during incubation or your humidity too high? this is the cause for late hatches?   doing so will not hurt your hatch as long as you follow my guidelines DO NOT GET YOUR EGGS WET.

sounds like a cool plan! you told me about the roofing, its cheaper here for the rolled tar roofing stuff here. at least for me.

I know right! that was a good one!

awwww  the aunt that just passed away was my Aunt Tootie   this chick is gorgeous

did you do a quick candle?

a few degrees can do it for sure

excellent example of WHY to calibrate!

I feel for you, almost all the fridge eggs are trash in my bator, and the serama out of kiddos pen are almost all infertle for some reason.  idk why!
I am so bummed.

nope  pa

Like your new avy

Thanks! It's of my Swedish Flower Hen, Reid. :)

I thought that if they are cheeping then they are internally pipped. Peeping means using their lungs doesn't it?

I think so.

now now! lol I told you the links were in the article silly, but I read on and see you figured it all out.   Glad they came in ok, HAVE you marked air cells since they came in? how do they look vs what I marked since I sent tthem

your flashlight cannot see into the air cells to see if air cells move or not? thats all you need to check? and then outline the air cells with a pencil, number then, write down their number on paper and if they are in good shape or if they have a  loose air cell or any other noticable things about the egg.... and if the air cell rolls end to end of the egg trash them, because I said so, dont waste time on them.

This should have done when you unwrapped them! and then not candled again until day 7 sweetness!!!   NOW CHANGE OF PLANS.......   when did you set them your time zone..... and they are in a turner not turning correct?  at what heat? and what of the serama they are in the little machine?

Ok, so I admit, I candled two eggs then dropped the flashlight and it won't turn on anymore. My other light was not strong enough to see properly and I was frustrated. We drove onto town today and got another

all the eggs are sitting air cell up in egg cartons (inside the incubators). They are NOT turning. I did calibrate one of the small thermometers (using a plastic baggy in ice water) and used it to check the incubators and adjusted them as necessary.

Edit: temp is 100°F for uglybator and 100.5°F for mini

Edit2: I got them from the post office around 7:45am yesterday, we let them sit at room temperature for several hours, double checked the incubators, set them inside the incubators sometime in the afternoon???

Being the newbie, I stored all my eggs in the refrigerator, no turning either since I didn't plan on incubating any... After I had read about ppl hatching refrigerated Trader Joes eggs I figured it was worth a try. 5 out of 5 hatched. Most of the eggs in my current hatch were refrigerated and The oldest one is an 11 day old egg in my incubator right now that's developing fine. They all sat in the fridge and no turning either before I put them in. Fingers crossed!

@Sally Sunshine I have caught my temps dropping in the evening over the last 4 nights. I'm sure it's happened during day 1-17 as well. Not sure why because day temps are always steady. My humidity was at 45 until lockdown. I'm sure they are delayed because of the temp variants. I can see all 3 of them bumping around but wondered why I wasn't getting external pips.

When I get back home if they haven't externally pipped I'll try taking them out to candle.
how much of a temp drop? and these are bantams so may have been ok for them.... this is why calibration and no flux of temps is SO important... even if you take a cheap styro bator and switch out their thermostat and put in one of these your guaranteed to get a better hatch rate...same thing adding a cheap computer fan!!! and so easy to do!!

@ozexpat has images and info on how he does it and I think this is what he used?????

the can chirp and peep before the internal pip dont let that fool you, seen them do it when I though I needed to assist, but that coulda been a freak too ??? cause they are supposed to make the pip when they need the oxy but I saw it edit to add and I wasnt drinking no sweet tea neither

oh crap! ok stuff happens! are any of the other thermometers the same as the one you calibrated? remember temps 100.5 ccl and 20-30% humidity until candle

I wouldnt candle them anymore, let them alone at this point! DONT TOUCH THEM UNTIL day 7, you are very far away and they went for a heck of a trip to you so I am sure air cells are bad.
start a gentle hand turn upright at day 2 as below or you can gently lift one end and then the other of the carton if you have room in the bator and your temps are the same all around the bator. you have no choice but to be careful with all of them,

mine hatched last time, all of them, so I figured I would do it again,

Ok, sounds good, that's what I assumed when I decided to simply let them set. Treat them all like they are super fragile. They are all in egg cartons (or egg carton cups separated out for the serama so they could fit in the mini) - so that should be easy enough. Will gently candle on day 7 and see how things are :D My new flashlight is awesome btw so I will try to get pictures of my candles, but no promises!

Edit: all my thermometers are different. @Sally Sunshine
The mini's thermometer is built in. I can't calibrate it except by comparing it to another calibrated thermometer. Which is what I did.
The Uglybators control thermomter/hydrometer is the raw deal, no casing, directly wired into the arduino, which is programmed to control the incubator. Again, I wouldn't know how I could calibrate it except by comparing it to another calibrated thermometer.

Inside uglybator we have two free standing thermometer/hydrometers.
One is a small 1 by 1.5 inch square digital from avian supplies. This one is the one I calibrated, and it was only .2 off to begin with!
The other is those big grey digital accutemp ones from walmart that everyone has. Didn't try to calibrate it.

I used the small calibrated thermometer/hydrometer to double check the mini and uglybator. uglybator is PERFECT according to it, and the mini runs .7 degrees cool, so I just adjusted the temp to reflect that. Hope that makes sense!

(also my accutemp is pretty spot on -though it only shows a whole degree. I must be lucky!)

@Sally Sunshine from 102 down to 100 (I'm using a still air bator). The thing I didn't think about, I forgot my heat temp changes at night. Uggg... How did I not remember that. It totally makes sense why the temp only changes at night. :th. Crap, I will need to change that setting.

oh man on the thermometers! if any have a probe, take your own temp with them and see if its calibrated with a home health thermometer. sometimes that might help with one of them anyways
