To see if marker pens kill embryos?

Yes, and to see if any of the black leaches through. -Kathy

Kathy I think if the marker is Alcohol based paint it will evaporate from the shell in the bator, but if the Marker is water based paint with the humidity of the bator it can penetrate the shell. I whould put anoter test to see if there is a diferent betwee this 2 brands.

Well, after everyone got fed, since my foot was feeling better, I started taking down the hawk-prevention streamers from the old paddocks and taking down the fencing, in preparation for redoing them so the NNs can begin ranging from their new coop (now that they think of it as home). I've really needed to do this for a week or so. I came in for a break, and I had another chick in the 'bator!!! So maybe I'll keep doing stuff outside to ensure more and more chicks show up!

(Heaven knows I have enough to do...) It's raining a bit, so I can't do the lumber sanding easily. And I have stuff from work I have to work on as well (avoiding that for the moment).

I got a new waffle iron the other day, and have some really good maple syrup - maybe I'll make waffles!!!!!!

Actually, it wasn't bad. 'Bout the most I did was bring in a couple loads of wood & help bring in a few more.

Oh, and made sure that the 5 dogs my granddaughter showed up with didn't get into my birds. I definitely was not a happy camper. Fortunately, all the birds were contained & safe, although quite upset by a dog bouncing off the chain-link trying to gain access. If one of those dogs, even one of the 9 week old pups, had gotten one of my birds, there'd have been dog splattered all over the landscape. I certainly let dear GD know that dogs on the loose around chickens is a recipe for disaster. Poor birds probably won't lay for a week. Never ceases to amaze me the lack of common sense some "adults" show...GD's 23 or 24!

Couldn't have said it better. I've had a lot of dogs bouncing off of chain link and coop windows here. That's what my shotgun is for.

One evening my wife scheduled a chick fest with wine, chatting with friends sitting around a fire and everyone bringing their dogs.
Most were little foo foo dogs but one was a big mongrel my wife's best friend had recently rescued from the pound. It was on the prowl when all my chickens were still out.
It kept ranging farther and farther afield and I told her to contain her dog because the chickens were out. She nonchalantly said, "oh I don't think he'll hurt them". I was like

. I said, it's a dog, that's what they do. Each time I pleaded with her to contain the dog, she kept saying it would be fine. Finally, I told her, "don't make me kill your dog." She was in shock and said, "you wouldn't kill my dog". I calmly said, "If your dog grabs one of my chickens, I'll kill your dog." I then brought out the shotgun that's always loaded on the back porch and she panicked. She started calling her dog but it was too late. It blasted through the woods chasing chickens. Luckily for her, they all got away.
After things calmed down she was incredulous and couldn't understand why I would kill a dog over a chicken. She's a chef and the only thing she knows about chickens is how to cook them.
She still to this day (after much explanation) can't understand why trios of this breed go for $250.

My bday is in May, and I usually end up tilling the garden and setting plants that day!

As for the dog issue, my youngest son, 28, seems to have the same thought process as your GD, he brought his 6 month old boxer out a few years ago, went straight at the flock (free range) and my Roo got trampled into the mud before he could control the dog.
The poor Roo was literally stuck in the mud and turf when I got to it. He survived, but the dog has been leash only ever since when he visits.

Mine's in April and I do something similar. Hopefully have all the tomatoes ad possibly chilies and herbs in by then.

Believe it or not, being the avid fisherman that I am, I've never set foot in a canoe. Been on my share of bass boats, rowboats, and such, even a belly boat (float tube) but never a canoe. If I ever get in one, it'll be one with a wide, flat bottom, not one that'll flip if I blink at the wrong time; I wouldn't care to take an unplanned soaking, and I swim like an anchor. I've capsized one boat; don't want to repeat the experience.

You described my canoe to a T. It is a very stable cargo barge (my description). It's a white water excursion boat that holds 1,00 lbs. No keel and fair rocker for turning on a dime. Fairly wide with excellent tumblehome for shedding water.
An 'Old Towne Appalachian'.
I used it on the Missouri River 340 - the world's longest non-stop canoe race.
The scariest was when a line of barges came upstream right at dusk. There was no way to take cover so I just blasted through the 4' roller waves that kept coming for a long time.

Growing up we always did Jon Boats on MO and AR streams. I didn't start canoeing till I was in my 20s. I believe I would be happy canoeing small mountain streams every day the rest of my life.
We have a very few small class IV and V rivers. They're mostly kayak and decked canoe streams but I've paddled them alone in this open cargo barge with no mishaps.
We tube A LOT in Missouri.
There's maybe 40+ excellent float streams south of the Missouri river.

I have an update for my current batches of eggs. Of the 8 in the first set, I pulled the one quitter (found day 7 but left it in JIC) but the other 7 are doing great (including the cracked one). Today is day 16 for them (candled yesterday... a day late

Of the 33 in the second batch, I pulled one clear. Today is day 9 for them and they got candled yesterday on day 8 (again... a day late

.)

Upgrades to the bator this round include:
Better fan placement
Replaced a loud fan
Moved the thermocouple sensor for the thermostat closer to the bulb (reduced the amount of time the light stays on and reduced the amount of temperature fluctuation to about .7*)
Made a baffle to go in front of the main heating bulb to block radiant heat
Installed auto-turner
Reduced the size (surface area) of the pre-lockdown water well to lower humidity during the early part of incubation (Last batch my air cells were too small)

Will be making a coolerbator hatcher in the next day (cutting it a little close but it took forever for my 2nd thermostat to get here)

You sound like me. I have so much refurbishing to do to my cabinet incubator/hatcher combination.

I can imagine! If mine had been free-ranging, which they would have been were it not for the fact that I have a new rooster that I want to be familiar with the area before I turn him out with his lady friends, and 5 dogs who probably had never even seen a chicken before suddenly started after them, I'd have one very unhappy granddaughter today.

It's a moot point now anyway - three more pips and another zip in progress, no way am I opening that thing. S/he's got air, so she'll be ok to wait if I decide to help. The first one out has moved over to the actively zipping one and is playing cheerleader and trying to help.

But thanks for the reminders and reassurance - still a beginner at this, helps to have reassurance.

I read everything two or three times, decide what I'm going to do in each possible circumstance, and then the hatch begins and my brain just... MELTS...
