Quote: really? I felt bad I culled a mentally ill chick that wouldnt shut up friday night and was acting all weird, but not for the chick, for the fact that I did so without much thought! eeeeeeekkkk it was not shutting up driving me insane and it was half the size of the others and boney. had to go.
Good morning all. Started the morning off right, a pair of coyotes took a dirt nap at the butt crack of dawn. The work never stops around this place so I better get going.
@Sally Sunshine you wanted pictures - roaming the brooder, with one snuggled at the TOP of the Mama Heating pad, under the baby diaper (climbing on day one!) - he peeked out to see what I was doing:
They are all doing great, have woken up, and are wandering all over the brooder, pecking/eating and exploring. I will leave paper towels down until they're all able to run well, but they seem to be walking relatively ok (despite all that egg spelunking and egg cup sitting they had to do in the 'bator). They all come running (well, stumbling) up to my hand when I put it in - so friendly. It really is pleasant to have these sorts of chicks - I like having Cream Legbars in my flock, but it's a strain when they're skittish.
It persists to adulthood. If one of the Cream Legbars gets out of the paddock (like yesterday), it's like chasing a cat, very difficult to get her back in, and they act like you like a predator (and no, I wasn't being threatening). Whereas the Naked necks, well - I just put them in their new paddock yesterday, and apparently they found a gap under the fence to get under and three got out this morning after they were let out of the coop (this fence is not for predator protection, but just to keep them confined to their allowed space in the yard). So I went out to put them back in. How? Well, I just squat down and say "Come here" and hold out my hand, and they walk up to me, and I pick them up and put them back in, one after another. (I should point out that this behavior started in the brooder and was not related to food or treats - they actually don't like mealworms and prefer grass/dirt). Have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE Naked Necks?
One baby still drying off in the 'bator, no pips form the remaining four eggs (and no sounds, though there was chirping yesterday). I will continue to wait...

So... I was looking at light sockets on amazon, I found one I think will work.... I look at frequently bought together and see... A computer fan and a 12V adapter??!? Hey, I think I know why....
Anyways, do you think Amazon was right? Are these the correct sizes and all?
Quote: you can up to two days before or after I think! @mlm Mike how does this work?
The time you set does not matter. The eggs counted for the guess the number set/number hatched contests are the ones set +/- two days for the EHAL set day. so March 3rd- 7th for LF chickens @country lovin
Thank you Mike!
Oh, you bet - my NN girls just started laying (at 20-21 weeks), so it's just too early to hatch from them (and they're still laying slightly weird eggs right now anyway). And I have a bunch of chicks coming from a breeder in April. So if I hatch again this year (besides maybe a small one for Easter HAL), it'll be Fall...
Teaching Respiratory pathology to the medical students currently, working on Cardiovascular pathology materials for the next module. Just finished reviewing the valve disease lecture, so next is the atherosclerosis/myocardial infarction lecture and then some interactive self study materials on other cardiac diseases. Fortunately these are sessions I've given before, so I just have to review and update them. But I end up sitting in one spot/position for way too long, so it's good to get up every once and a while and do chicken stuff... But I have to pick up the pace - I've got my lecture materials on cancer to do for the Pharmacy students in Austin next. Busy, busy day...
Great news!! and you got me on the double yolker, keep candling all around looking for clear yolk spots when they are gone is when you may have to check on them... not sure I can help you at all other than that!
been trying to keep up on the thread but that is nearly impossible for those that have a life outside BYC
. Anyhoooo, I will be picking up 4 doz hatching eggs in the next couple weeks. Last year we hatched out out barnyard mutts which was a good experience for my first hatch. This year I have wanted to acquire some Blue Amerecauna pullets to add our flock, found a local person selling eggs. Man they are hard to find... But managed to find some local
. I will be getting 4 doz with a combo of hatching out a mix of blues, black and splash. I am just hoping I have a better success rate than last year. I filled the bator with 42 and we hatched 16, not a great run.
Back to the front page of thread to re-read the reference materials. Sally thank you for this thread and to everyone who contributes to the thread, it has been fascinating to say the least.
