They look interesting and pretty. I hope you enjoy them. They would sweat to death hear ;)
Chickens don't have sweat glands. All my chickens are black except the skin and they do great in our heat. I think ACs would do as well with the big combs and wattles.
All black, organs and EVERYTHING is black. I saw where people were callin them the Lamborghini of chicken, because they are extremely expensive and I just happened to get mine for a great deal!
There was someone on the Old Folks Home thread that was raising them.
The epitame of "blackened chichen"... but I would have a hard time eating one. I like my chicken to be white(ish)....
Black skinned birds are a favorite in the Asian community. The Asian/Latin market (seafood city) near me has one of those open top meat freezers that is full of silkies. They look a little like Cornish Game Hens - except black.
Yes I agree I don't know how anyone could even think about eating that and even spending that much money just to eat them
I would think the fact that they are much bigger than silkies would make them a hit.
It's called "different strokes for different folks".
That's for sure. I peruse the frozen food section at another Asian market in So. St. Lou and I'm amazed at what I find there. The things that look like 8" roaches are what really turn me off.
Good morning.... Incubator update. After all this time, I have found a more suitable place for my incubator... After struggling with the temperatures of 108 and stuff.. I have it fluctuating between 97 and 100 degrees.... Have not focused on the humidity yet... Is 97 degrees to low for the quail eggs?
I hope they weren't at 108 long. I gave up once after a week on 30 eggs that the LG subjected to swings from 92-108. I quit turning and forgot to remove the eggs. I switched to broody hens putting new eggs under them. I went into the cellar and heard some noise. Checking it out, there were 2 chicks running around the incubator. Wild temp swings and no turning the last 2 weeks and they still hatched on their own. You just can't kill these birds no matter how hard you try.
I think Fire370 have them!

Shalom CC!
What color are they? I have in incubation 4 rumpless Wheaten Araucanas.
Good day Benny!

The parent stock were Wheaten and Blues. The breeder I got them from keeps hers separate and marked the eggs clearly with date and parentage, so I ended up with 9 eggs from both varieties.
when I candled last night, I have 8 wheaten and 5 blues that have made it to lock down. I had to lock down early due to some other commitments I have this evening.

@Chaos18 Thank you so much for the update!!

@Sally Sunshine - I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with the laptop!! Thank you for the trouble you always go through for us!!

@chicken hawk 33 My silkie roo doesn't look much different than the hens, but there are streamers coming out of the back of his head, where the hens have nice fluffy balls of feathers. Also, the hens have much smaller combs. I'll try to get photos tomorrow.

@Mirajane - BEAUTIFUL birds. I found them at Greenfire for $199 per chick. Good luck with your hatch!!!!

Hello everyone. Just popping in!!! I actually have a PIP on day 21!!! Yeah!!!! I'm having a little trouble regulating the humidity. We are adding water hourly at this point, so I'm not too worried. But I had to run into work for a few hours - I'm hoping my mom is up to the task!!

Quick check. This chick's navel is a little herniated and slightly bleeding. Is this ok for now? (Daughter's tea set came in handy)

Will be reading notes too, don't worry.

Who wouldn't want to eat a black chicken? I don't know why, but that's why I bought some. I an raise them for whatever purpose I want.
When you end up butchering them, let me know if the blood is black which is what I've heard.

Does black chicken taste a whole lot different than the rest... I know there are cultures out there that love to eat silkie meat.
I don't know but I doubt it tastes different - at least not by much.

ohhh no, I haven't put the eggs in yet.. Im just stabilizing before I do. I didn't cook them up.
That's good.

Having no desire to eat black chicken meat, I couldn't say. There also cultures that raise totally featherless chickens; just something I wouldn't enjoy seeing roaming around in my yard.
That takes away the joy of watching them in the yard.
I had a neighbor with chickens. He doesn't eat eggs or chickens. I asked him why he raised them. He said he likes sitting at his desk in the morning an watching them walking around the yard.

I don't even want them ugly looking half nekid ones running around my yard...........I'm the only one who's allowed to run nekid through the yard.
I bet that scares your chickens.

I have a wonderful palm tree in my yard, unfortunately 8 years ago a devastating beetle entered Israel from Asia, the red Sago beetle, and she is destroying systematically ten thousand of palm trees here, so I am now treating the first of 4 treatments /year to prevent it to destroy my tree!
My tree:
. Damage trees

The beetle.

My treatment
I hope you get them under control.
