Hello I'm new to the site. I just bought a home made incubator made from a wooden cabinet. It has a fan and heated by lights. It has 3 wooden shelves in it and the eggs sit between the wooden slats. What I'm worried about is when the chick's hatch they will probably fall through the slats to the bottom of the incubator. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Someone tell me if I'm wrong. Isn't the only thing a float test will tell is how much water is lost and nothing about viability of the embryo?

Amen.

I do the same with penedesenca. Trust the temp, humidity and fertility. Voila - chicks.

Well I floated some quail eggs today. They have blue shells and you can't see inside. After settling down from bobbing from being placed in the water half of them were dead still. The other half rotated either left or right in slow spins. I eggtopsied the still ones and they were all dead. I left the spinners in for another day. We'll see.

Pictures would help. I would guess you move the eggs to hatch on the bottom.

Quote: Sorry, good luck with the remaining eggs.

Went to lockdown yesterday with 45 eggs out of 48, yesterday afternoon we had severe weather and lost electricity for 5 hrs and my bator temp went down to 78 degrees. Any hope on my eggs to hatch?

Gosh, yes! But in the future (if you are home) wrap it in towels, add Hot hands, and always be sure you have at least a few closed jars of water (think glass baby food jars or canning jars) to help keep the temperature stable. It works throughout the hatch, and helps in a power outage.
