Good morning! Thanks for the coffee - now if I could have cig with it I'd be much happier!

The glass therm that came with the Brinsea 20 Eco has the mercury (or whatever that stuff is) separated at the high end so it's hard to read. Tried to follow someone's instructions and fix it, but didn't work. Helped a lot, but not enough. The other therm is a probe type and it was calibrated using the ice water method. The last one is a wireless digital and I really don't want to stick it in water....

So I'll just try to come up with an average temp and go from there, I guess. Humidity hasn't been an issue at all....holds very steady at 32%. I know that will fluctuate once the eggs go in, but if it holds this well empty I'm hoping that it will rebound and steady out as the eggs go in and I make small additions to the water well.

I have a question for those who raise their chickens for eggs and meat. I had a fairly unsuccessful hatch a week ago. The 1st one that hatched, I was told to leave her in the bator until she dried, which I did. Then she started developing spraddle legs. I did the bandaid thing on her tiny legs for 4 days as suggested on this site. It did help for 1 leg, but the other it didn't, and the bad leg is now facing at 4-5:00 (but not flipping up in the air anymore at least).
I only had 2 chicks make it; the 2nd chick I removed from the Bator at 6 hrs. and she's fine (note: everything is a "she" until crows). But I'm torn as to what I should do with the mamed one if anything. I don't want the other one to get lonely, but I am afraid she won't be accepted into the Flock later on. I have no way of knowing if she's in pain as she just make the normal chick Twitter's just like the other chick, although the other chick does seem to pick on her a little, but not a lot (the smaller chick is a day younger).
Re homing isn't an option right now.
I'm not sure if keeping her is just prolonging the inevitable or if I should put her down. This is the 1st we're experiencing spraddle legs. Our flock are large breeds and they bully each other as it is (even though they have a ton of room to roam)
Any wisdom would be appreciated.

200+ posts? Holy smokies! (ooh, did I have to say 'smokes?).... Don't you people have eggs to hatch or sumpthin'?

@flocktastic I'll add my prayers to the others for your little girl. Our little Ashley was diagonosed with leukemia a year ago January when she was 6 years old....I know how difficult it is to wrap your head around.

Okay, I'm going back to real life now....Gotta figure out why this incubator has 3 thermometers in it and shows 3 different temperatures. Eggs due to be shipped this week.

Hey @Blooie

I just posted this elsewhere today and it may help you.

"Here's what you are dealing with.
Not all thermometers read at the same timing. Also not all thermometers are accurate.
Understand that almost all incubators thermostats are in an on or off state.
What you are trying to achieve is a constant and appropriate internal egg temperature.
If a thermometer samples when the heat element is energized, it will read in the 100s.
When the temperature drops below set point, heat will turn on till the thermostat kicks off. Temperature will continue to rise for a few seconds to minutes while the heat element cools.
The readings on a good instant read thermometer will swing wildly and constantly.

Get 2 guaranteed accurate thermometers and throw the rest out. There will still be swings in readings unless your thermostat energizes in a graduated scale but you'll know what is up."

Lots of thoughts and prayers would be great today!! Taking my daughter back to the pediatric oncologist. They've been watching an enlarged lymph node in her neck since January for possible lymphoma. We go back today to see if the Dr thinks it's grown anymore or if they'll need to schedule her for a biopsy. She's only 5.5yrs old...I'm hoping we get good news today. Thank you for any prayers/good thoughts/vibes, etc!!

My thoughts go out to you and your little girl. I can't even begin to understand how stressful that must be.

@venymae

Kids garden area. Free reign for what they want to plant, pull, cut, dig, or whatever else they decide to do.
What a GREAT idea!! Adorable kids too!!!

For the wireless digital hygro - put it in a zip lock bag (I double bagged mine) and drop that into the ice water. Good luck!!

Good morning/afternoon everyone! The weather is beautiful out here today! Too bad I'm stuck in the office....

Some of us (not me) have set them in teacups, or something similar, narrower at the bottom than the top, to hold the legs up under them...have food & water within reach. Your chick may be too old for that to work; someone smarter than I will have to advise you on that aspect. Good Luck with her.

Thank you, everything I've read has said pretty much that if she's not cured by now, she won't be.
I wonder what her mom would have done, or if she would have even let it get this far?
I watch my animals and try learn how they handle things, but this is something new.
