Can you catch her after she goes to roost?
Or to lay an egg?
Might catch her while laying, but there's no roost in the coop; at least not one low enough to jump up onto w/o smacking their heads...they never have used it. Can't lower it w/o having to duck to get under it. They've slept in the bedding and nest boxes ever since the coop was new a year ago; perfectly happily. Plus, the access doors are only big enough for a chicken; not for a man to reach to the far end, even if I could identify her.

Watch her from a distance and see how she is... If she looks pretty normal then netting her is very unlikely to worsen her condition. Instead of netting her, try catching her a night while she's roosting. How comfortable are you with examining her? Can your check her for lice and mites, weigh her, etc. ?

I could probably check her, though I never have. Not sure if her added weight would register on a bathroom scale with me holding her or not. Only other option is DW's gram scale for her life-long dieting.

I'm sure you do. Were you planning to tell us what it is, or do we have to guess?  :barnie
okay so people say you have to store eggs at 60 or 65 degrees and in egg cartons and all of this stuff. Then how come a hen can go however many days without turning the nothing and just laying until she is ready to set on them

Around 30 hours of being pipped for these two chicks... Cheeping really loud, and made some progress with pipping, but I'm wondering if they just can't get out either. They both talk a LOT.

Probably a good idea to catch one and inspect them for lice and mites since birds that roost in bedding are more likely to have them.

I said I've never checked her for lice or mites. I should have said I've never checked any chickens; never had any very long before the coons wiped me out. That's why they're in a smaller coop now; wanted something closer to the house that was easy to keep tabs on, as opposed to the big 8x10 walk-in up by the barn.

You could pop the cap and see if they are glued down like the one you lost. I know I would.

thank you! yes the hen has tuffs. I floated the 4 eggs. 1 sank and 3 floated at the air cell line. What does this mean??

@casportpony. I think the one is dead. The others if they are awake may wiggle. I know there is a post in the information links on it. I have never done it myself.
