I am using a 25 watt light buld for heat and am going into lockdown now. Raised the wire rack with 2 pcs of 1x1 wood strips and have 3 soaked sponges under the wire. Replaced eggs on wire and sealed up the holes. What if the temp. starts going high like 105 and up? Do I dare try to lower it? I have no idea if any eggs are alive or not.13 eggs 2 are sultun and the others cochin, wwyandotte, dominque and buff brahma. And daddys are cochins. When I candled the eggs I could not see any light area outside of the end air pocket. Are there any pics of candled eggs at 18 days? Still need to rebuild another incubator and return the Little giant to TSC. The controls are a mess and readings all over the place. Son in law stopped home at 7 pm and had 3 beautiful thick styro boxes. Just like Christmas! All different in size. I have my fan from old pc and will pick up water heater temp. thing tomorrow, have wire and cord. Not sure what else I will need. Thanks for any advice you can send my way.

UNSEAL THOSE HOLES! The chicks need oxygen. As for the temperature, don't let it get to 105° . Lower temperatures are better, 96 and 97 even. But not 104, 105.

I'm not trying to start a fuss but I was told that most of the time If a chick doesn't hatch on its own, that usually there's something wrong with it. Anyone else heard this?

Yes, that is a popular opinion. For the most part I think we all agree with it. The exception being that human error does happen. If the only problem is that the chick is stuck due to low humidity, there is no harm in helping it.

Or maybe because it was weakened from repeated candling and tipping and cooling. Or maybe even bacterial infection???

This was inevitable at some point.
But sometimes It's just the egg. I locked down 34 fertile eggs that had been exposed to normal care, rotated each time I candled, good air cells, yet 4 hatched on day 20 and 24 hatched on day 21. 6 didn't hatch. I don't think it was anything I did, I don't think there was anything I could have done to help them hatch. They just weren't strong enough. When you only hatch 1 or 2 eggs, sometimes you get an egg that doesn't hatch. I think it more stressful to lose 1 egg, when you only incubated 2, than to incubate 50 and only hatch 45.

Thanks mc.

Quote: Couldn't agree with you more. Some eggs are just not meant to hatch and that is fine.

I just hatched a mixed batch of eggs. All but 3 eggs did not hatch and they were all swedish black hen eggs. The other breeds and several swedish blacks did fine. The unhatched chicks all looked normal and had internally pipped but they must have a weakness as a breed as they were the only breed that did not hatch. That is life.

@daxigait Hey I wanted to give you a huge THANK YOU! I've been at work all day and haven't got an opportunity to respond but your questions kept me thinking. I knew what would happen if I did nothing.

My last attempt at a assisted hatch just prolonged the chick's pain and I didn't want to repeat that. Seeing you ask about it made me reconsider assisting.

I just assisted out both of the zipped ones. They both look like they'll at least get a chance.Their belly button s were healed and both are trying to stand although one is having more success at the moment. I was able to give them a drop of molasses water. I'll let you know what happens. :D

@Sally Sunshine 2 out 6 is where it stands.
That is great. They were in the shell pushing so long, you may have to straighten their toes out on a piece of cardboard thin like pasta box cut small. Put toes out normal and tape down with like medical tape and leave for a day or so. Good luck

I have a question - but not sure how to ask. Do roosters hit puberty before hens? My teenage group of chickens are just over 3 months old One rooster, 9 hens in the group. The rooster is starting to mount the hens, but I don't expect them to start laying for a few months. Although we did have a wind egg along the fence line these chickens share with my laying hens. The rooster is an EE, hens are 5 EEs, 1 BO, 1 Dominique, 1 BA and 1 NHR. What is the earliest you all have had a hen start laying?
