I have a question - but not sure how to ask. Do roosters hit puberty before hens? My teenage group of chickens are just over 3 months old One rooster, 9 hens in the group. The rooster is starting to mount the hens, but I don't expect them to start laying for a few months. Although we did have a wind egg along the fence line these chickens share with my laying hens. The rooster is an EE, hens are 5 EEs, 1 BO, 1 Dominique, 1 BA and 1 NHR. What is the earliest you all have had a hen start laying?
Yes, the boys can get interested in hens at that age and can fertilize eggs way before hens of the same age are laying.

Erm, guys some of the chicks look like they have poop around their butts... is this normal?
That is pasty butt.

Just keep the butts clean (so that the poop does not get hard and stop the chick from pooping), and make sure they are warm enough and have clean water and food.

Chicks are prone to a condition called "pasty butt" where dropings stick to their vents and clog it up, making it impossible for them to relieve themselves. If left untreated this can kill them. Check your chicks' bottoms every few hours, especially during the first 2 weeks. If you find a pasty bottom carefully soak and remove the plug, pat the area and dry and apply a little vaseline or vegetable oil to the area. Organic ACV (apple cider vinegar) in their drink water is found to really help prevent this condition. A ratio of 3-4 tablespoons to a gallon water is recommended.

Guys one of the poops was hard but when i got it off it pulled a downy off and there was a tiny dot of blood, will it be okay? I put a napkin up to its but to see if i could stop it but it didnt seem to bleed much after that. Is it okay? It was like a tiny dot,the size of a needle.
