Morning everyone! My phone just deleted my quotes and I also suffer from CRS, so here goes...

Flocktastic, I'm sorry about the migrain. A dark, quiet room with a pillow over my head used to work

Sally, I don't have polish - I think the chick you asked about is a Spitzhauben.

MC I hope you remember the plans for your coop.

NaJoBeLe Congratulations on the BABY News!!

Chaos nice coop!

Cute doelings, LOTS of adorable chickens and a cute Thing 2 gossling!

I hope everyone has a great day!!!

Good advice.

Yeah, I hate when only 1 chick hatches and no others are in the incubator.

The earliest I've ever gotten an egg was between 20 and 21 weeks. I do keep them on lower light to delay laying though. I've heard of first eggs coming as early as 15 weeks. That's not a good thing though. IMHO, it can contribute to egg binding.
I've had Jaerhon cockerels that tried to mate anything that moved at about 3 months.
Just cause they're mating (however awkwardly) doesn't mean the fertility is good at that age.

That's amazing. I'd like to play with that.

Not normal but not uncommon. I've lost chicks to pasted vent when I had huge hover brooders full of chicks I couldn't see.
Since I now use Gro2Max probiotic powder in chicks first water I haven't had any pasty butt. Probably in the last 3 years.

Any way you can.
The more you can moisten it the better.
The ones that have it will likely continue to have it for a couple weeks.

Down sometimes comes off but not a big concern. It is better than being constipated to death.
It probably isn't a bad idea for all chicken keepers to have a styptic pencil on hand.

Supposed to be 50:50 but can be anything.
My son did the math for me one time and out of a dozen eggs, I think it was every 400 or 500 hatches, one might expect 100% boys or girls.

They'll sleep right along with you.
I once had a hatch that I gave up on after a week but forgot to clean out or turn off the incubator. I went into the cellar a few weeks later and heard a bunch of noise.
2 chicks had hatched and were running around the incubator and I had no idea for how long.

Get well sir.

Just make sure it is able to be buttoned up tight at night except for the big hardware cloth covered windows.

I just went out to feed and it was quieter than normal. I had a 2 room breeder house with a couple roosters sharing one side while I was working on trap nests in the other room. They weren't standing on the roost crowing like normal. I peeked in to see how their food and water was and they were both laying under the roost half eaten.
Raccoons had pried the siding off the wall one the opposite side of the building. I'm down to 5 mature roosters now.
Bummer.

Sounds familiar.

I am going to respond to everything here. I sent 24 eggs a few months ago, expecting only three or four to hatch. I had had no luck with my previous two hatches. I have 18 chicks. Two more didn't make it because I had opened the incubator at the wrong time. I had two clears, and two that quit. Had I only sat three or four eggs, I probably would have only gotten one! LOL!
Hmmm... What's next?
I will definitely make sure that the coop is raccoon safe. That is pretty disgusting that you had to find your roosters like that. Also a little surprising. I would think that several roosters would have attacked the raccoon.

As for hatch ratios, in the past I never hatched out any boys in the incubator. Only once did a hen have two boys in with her nine girls.
I think that is all I wanted to respond to.

Hi all,,I posted an update on the other thread (for the April hatch a long..then I saw on this thread asking for updates here. Unless I'm blind, when someone posted updates, didn't see my name listing my original info. Just wanted to let u know I'm still in, and ask if we are supposed to post our updates here, on HAL thread, or both. It's my first HAL so I didn't know. Thx and I love this site!
For the April hatch a long you would just need to post updates in the April hatch a long thread. You're more than welcome to join us here too, if you like. Then I guess you would have to post in both.

Good

That's the reasoning behind the number of duck eggs I'm setting this weekend. I only got two duckling out of the 8 eggs that made it to lock down, so if I double the number that get to lockdown I'll get 4 more right? With my luck though they'll all hatch and I'll be over run with them.

During the day perhaps but not at night. At night the raccoon climbs up on the roost before they know anything is there. They may be able to feel it but they can't see it.
Those 2 roosters had really bad frostbite and I kept them in the cellar till they recovered. I had no where else to put them and since they had been living together I figured this building was good all the doors had been bolted closed.
At least there were no hens in the building.
Today I have to look around for any loose siding edges on all the buildings and screw them down.
I also have to set some traps tonight.
