My wife thinks I should jot stuff down as well cause I CRS.

That's why mine makes the "honey do list" she says if it isn't written down the conversation never happened. She has to be the one to write it though. It's posted on the side of the fridge but I still try to say I never got the message.

Hi all,,I posted an update on the other thread (for the April hatch a long..then I saw on this thread asking for updates here. Unless I'm blind, when someone posted updates, didn't see my name listing my original info. Just wanted to let u know I'm still in, and ask if we are supposed to post our updates here, on HAL thread, or both. It's my first HAL so I didn't know. Thx and I love this site!

That's usually how it goes for us as well. Although the "honey do list" is all projects for her and I just forget what projects I'm doing

UNSEAL THOSE HOLES! The chicks need oxygen. As for the temperature, don't let it get to 105° . Lower temperatures are better, 96 and 97 even. But not 104, 105.
...
Yes, that is a popular opinion. For the most part I think we all agree with it. The exception being that human error does happen. If the only problem is that the chick is stuck due to low humidity, there is no harm in helping it.
Good advice.

But sometimes It's just the egg. I locked down 34 fertile eggs that had been exposed to normal care, rotated each time I candled, good air cells, yet 4 hatched on day 20 and 24 hatched on day 21. 6 didn't hatch. I don't think it was anything I did, I don't think there was anything I could have done to help them hatch. They just weren't strong enough. When you only hatch 1 or 2 eggs, sometimes you get an egg that doesn't hatch. I think it more stressful to lose 1 egg, when you only incubated 2, than to incubate 50 and only hatch 45.
Yeah, I hate when only 1 chick hatches and no others are in the incubator.

I have a question - but not sure how to ask. Do roosters hit puberty before hens? My teenage group of chickens are just over 3 months old One rooster, 9 hens in the group. The rooster is starting to mount the hens, but I don't expect them to start laying for a few months. Although we did have a wind egg along the fence line these chickens share with my laying hens. The rooster is an EE, hens are 5 EEs, 1 BO, 1 Dominique, 1 BA and 1 NHR. What is the earliest you all have had a hen start laying?
The earliest I've ever gotten an egg was between 20 and 21 weeks. I do keep them on lower light to delay laying though. I've heard of first eggs coming as early as 15 weeks. That's not a good thing though. IMHO, it can contribute to egg binding.
I've had Jaerhon cockerels that tried to mate anything that moved at about 3 months.
Just cause they're mating (however awkwardly) doesn't mean the fertility is good at that age.

It also has SALLY written all over it!!

That's amazing. I'd like to play with that.

Erm, guys some of the chicks look like they have poop around their butts... is this normal?
Not normal but not uncommon. I've lost chicks to pasted vent when I had huge hover brooders full of chicks I couldn't see.
Since I now use Gro2Max probiotic powder in chicks first water I haven't had any pasty butt. Probably in the last 3 years.

How do i clean it off?
Any way you can.
The more you can moisten it the better.
The ones that have it will likely continue to have it for a couple weeks.

Guys one of the poops was hard but when i got it off it pulled a downy off and there was a tiny dot of blood, will it be okay? I put a napkin up to its but to see if i could stop it but it didnt seem to bleed much after that. Is it okay? It was like a tiny dot,the size of a needle.
Down sometimes comes off but not a big concern. It is better than being constipated to death.
It probably isn't a bad idea for all chicken keepers to have a styptic pencil on hand.

Out of 23 eggs if all were to hatch how many roosters should I expect
Supposed to be 50:50 but can be anything.
My son did the math for me one time and out of a dozen eggs, I think it was every 400 or 500 hatches, one might expect 100% boys or girls.

What if the chicks hatch when I'm asleep and are in the bator for hours will they be ok
They'll sleep right along with you.
I once had a hatch that I gave up on after a week but forgot to clean out or turn off the incubator. I went into the cellar a few weeks later and heard a bunch of noise.
2 chicks had hatched and were running around the incubator and I had no idea for how long.

Yeah it pretty much sucked last night chaos...I couldn't sleep....breathing I'd bad...I think from urethaning....so I've been hitting my nebulizer all night...then took prednisone burst....my shoulders hurt like Heck...took enough morphine to numb a horse.....silik hurts...still awake....
Get well sir.

Last week I finally figured out how I was going to build the new coop. Apparently, in my excitement at finally having a chance to get to it, I forgot how I was going to build it.
Just make sure it is able to be buttoned up tight at night except for the big hardware cloth covered windows.

I just went out to feed and it was quieter than normal. I had a 2 room breeder house with a couple roosters sharing one side while I was working on trap nests in the other room. They weren't standing on the roost crowing like normal. I peeked in to see how their food and water was and they were both laying under the roost half eaten.
Raccoons had pried the siding off the wall one the opposite side of the building. I'm down to 5 mature roosters now.
Bummer.

That's why I jot stuff down as I think about it. Also why I have numerous projects planned that may never actually make it to finished product. Seem to always be stuck in the designing phase and never make it to construction. When it comes time for construction phase I find something about the design I don't like and start winging it half way through.

Hope it comes back to you.

Sounds familiar.

Every time I've ever tried that, it makes the computer run 2x worse than before

Good Morning Whites!
Yeah, well...I'm about at the end of my rope with this da...ed thing. If I can't get it running right soon, I'm going to replace it. Problem is, I'm not convinced it's not the sorry ask Hughesnet service, which has never been what I'd call good, but it'll the only viable option in my situation..
