Re: rooster aggression: I've not noticed seasonal human aggression. However, just on principle, I'll not let my grand kids visit the chickens if they are out free ranging. With my roo, I have an arm's length policy. And use that policy from the moment they declare their gender. The only time I break that policy is for dominance training. I did that last spring with one youngster who declared himself at 2 weeks. When ever I put my hand in the brooder (with him and his 5 siblings, and his Mama) he'd come at me to defend his family! I'd snatch him up, and restrain him, use a finger to push his head down below chest level. Every time I released his head, he'd lunge at me. I kept doing that, occasionally pecking him back with my finger, until he'd voluntarily keep his head down. I'd then lower him and set his feet on the ground, but repeat the head down maneuver until he maintained position on the ground before letting him go. 2 weeks of this, and he never attacked me again. I was convinced that this "Little Man" was beyond rehabbing. But he became a model citizen. In the run, I routinely chase my rooster a bit. Just a "walk" not a run to move him from where ever he happens to be. If he's food aggressive, I use a bamboo stick or something similar to back him away from the treats while the girls eat. He doesn't get treats till I say he can. He knows his name. If he's picking on the bottom gal of the pecking order, I'll speak his name, as he's thundering across the yard to have his way with her. He'll stop and look at me, then decide he has some where else to be.

Unfortunately, he came up from behind me again a few days ago, running into the back of my leg. We were all in the run at the same time; he, the 5 hens, & I. I guess I got between him & his girls. He got another boot to the chest. He's yet to spur me; so far, he's only run into me. This is the 1st time he's ever had hens of his own. Since our last run-in, he's only taken corn from my hand once. When I open the coop in the morning he's the last one out. If I'm standing too close, he won't come out at all 'til I back off a bit.

I guess when he got his own ladies, he came into his own & quit being the friendly "pet" he was to start with. He usually gives me a wide berth now. Won't even stand still to be picked up. He normally gives me no problem, as long as I keep an eye on him. It's kind of disappointing, really, but I guess roosters are like breeding stallions; they all bear watching.

Just like your Shaggy, Tucker's my only rooster. He's doing what I got him to do; if he chooses not to be friendly that's his problem. If he chooses to make it a serious problem, I guess we'll have to make a decision. I hope it doesn't come to that.

I'm disappointed that he didn't keep his sweet demeanor for long :( he was always such a sweet boy here. Hopefully he stays smart and keeps his distance and does his job.
