Well that's what I'm trying to decide because I don't want to do it too soon. And trying to make more room for them currently in our garage so they aren't cramped. I think they'll be ok now that I've split the older group up into two different brooders...
Usually when they are about 6 wks old or fully feathered you can turn the heat off on them.

Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for weak/ill chicks post #3876
Hon, If I were any better I couldn't stand it, if you don't count stupid 'puter problems, which are a "forever" problem.

Phewweeee been cleaning brooders and its humid today!! QUESTION: So I did have two metal trough brooders in my garage...but my 2.5week olds that were in the largest trough (AN EXTRA LONG metal trough) were getting too big together to be in it much longer. (As many as there are)

My younger chicks are in the standard metal trough brooder.
I ended up with a giant cardboard box (like a full pallet gets shipped in) so I modified it and put an ecoglow 50 in it but here's my question...

I was thinking of taking half of the 2.5 week olds (so 17) and putting them in the gigantic pallet box brooder and then putting the other half back in the gigantic trough brooder. (We're building a new grow out pen this weekend)

Or should I move my smaller chicks (which there are about 30 of) from the smaller trough to the big trough? And put half the 2.5 weeks olds in the smaller trough?

Also, when is the soonest you move them to a grow out pen (ours will have coop and run on it for them) we're building it this weekend but wasn't planning to move them yet. My oldest group will be 3 weeks old on Monday.

Thannnnnks! Back to cleaning for a bit...!!

I think you should just go back to tractor supply and buy more chicks!!! Lol

With your current night time lows I'd be a little hesitant to move the 3 wk olds out than. Daytime doesn't look to be as big of a problem. 3 wk olds should have a spot that's about 85* where they can warm up if needed. How old were you thinking to let them get before kicking them out there?
My temps have been chilly for California standards, but not freezing. I moved my 3 - 5 week olds out to my grow out coop, no access to outside yet, that will happen this weekend since it's a coop build still in process. They do have a heat plate. We're running it off a VERY long extension cord. But we only turn on the heat plate at night.

Good luck!

My guy loves to throw everything so he's not allowed to touch eggs yet lollll...
He loves to feed them though...& he picks grass and goodies for them. Sometimes I have to stick him in his swing because when the cows come up, he thinks he'll just run straight for them!

He may have a future as a rodeo clown
