Thank you. I am safe anyway. Saying goodbye to the children did me in. It was when the reality fully hit me. "I am leaving behind Brian!" When I return again, the children will be adjusting to their new routines. Their new lives. I will be ripping off a bandage. Faced again with a house devoid of such a life. A large personality. His presence filled a house, let alone a room.
I cried so much as I hugged them goodbye. I tried not to. Oh, how I tried! But how do you treat it as nothing when a child, still needing a favorite blanket to sleep, loses her daddy? A 13-yr -old yells at his sister, and you are tempted to tell him he is not her father. He is now. No matter how young he is, the reality is that he is the man now.
So I am safe. But I am certainly not sound.

It's never easy to know people whose lives have been turned upside down. It's even worse when you're in that situation. Life will never be the same, and it feels like the end of the world. But it isn't. Time can't erase what's happened, but it sure does take a lot of the sting out of it. When we think of the loss, it makes us sad... but eventually the thoughts of loss will turn into joyful memories... and life returns to some semblance of normalcy. It's easy to become consumed by grief, but one has to keep in mind that it's not what the departed would want. It starts with putting one foot in front of the other, and soon you're off on the journey into the next chapter or your life. It's what we as humans must do in order to survive. Gone... but never forgotten. I hope you and your family find your peace and solace soon.

I won't try to tell you I know how you feel, 'cause I don't; I've never been in that situation. We'll all be thinking about you, though, and wishing you, your sister and her children peace & healing.

I had an uncle who went through the same thing. His wife died of cancer, leaving him to raise four kids ranging from 12 or 13, maybe younger, to about 3, three of them girls. They all came together & did what needed to be done. He had a rough go of it for a while, and made some mistakes, but he remarried, & everything worked out in the end.

Big hugs.... :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

Not sure there's anything I can say except to offer a hug. :hugs

Thank you all so very much. Your love and your prayers have been appreciated. You can't know how much you all mean to me. And the children seemed stunned by the number of people on here that said that they were thinking of them. I have the coolest "coworkers". Also the easiest job to understand. I can so easily explain each person that posts or sends a private message.

Well it's day 7 and I think Miss Ellie the broody is totally failing. Although she has sat diligently on her eggs, it appears that she is not turning them and they are all growing on one side of the egg. I took the viable ones from her, hoping they will make it and put them in the incubator. I left her a few that I'm almost positive aren't viable and marked an X on one side so I can check to see if my assumption is correct. Has anyone ever had this happen? Suggestions? Here are two photos of the same egg:

@MotorcycleChick

I have had the opportunity to experience some significant grief in my life, and this is something I learned, and a way I learned to think about it and understand it that helped me a lot.

Grief is like a gravitational body that you are in an elliptical orbit around. At first, you are orbiting it so tightly and quickly that you are close to the pain almost constantly, and it seems that you can't escape. But as time passes, the orbit gets larger like a spiral, little bit by little bit, and the times in between the pain get longer, and longer, and longer. It gets better. But the important thing is that with a significant loss, you are never over it - you are always in an orbit around it, and you just get longer and longer periods between the times that you are "close" to it. And with experience over time, you are able to approach these times of "closeness" with a certain degree of reflection, and potentially further personal growth.

I still am surprised at times, almost stunned, at how painful it can be to recall my own personal loss, and it was over 20 years ago. But the point, and the reason I'm saying all this, is that one is never "over it", and even if one is advised to "move on", it will always be with you, and will "move on" with you. The important thing to realize is that that isn't some sort of personal failure not to have "gotten over" something that was tragic and filled with grief for you. You incorporate it into your life, and continue as best you can - as a changed person.
