For the update: I'll be building this incubator and running a test hatch when my cockerels are old enough to start laying seeds- probably February at the earliest. By then the weather will make me need something like chicks to improve my mood.

good luck how long did you store the eggs before setting?   and at what humidity did you store them and temps?

My oldest egg is from 11/2. That was the day they first started laying. So the oldest is 7 days old. My newest just popped out of the vent about 2 hours ago. I kept them inside my garage, at roughly 60 degrees. Humidity is about 36% inside. Is that too low?

My egg, with the air cell on the side,is still alive
I had a successful hatcher from a side air cell. It pipped and zipped in the perfect way and is now one of my keeper roosters because he is the most laid back chicken-ever. He'll be around as eye candy (buff-laced brahma) and companionship. My other rooster is a Wheaten Ameraucana and is still docile but seems like he'll protect the flock too.

I have another question. When I go into lock down, do they stay in their wire holders, or do I remove the holders and let them lay on their sides?

IF,enyone could answer.I have had temp spikes of 105 in my still air bator,I was wondering,if it can course early hatches.?
how long were the temps that high? You don't want early hatches, trust me. My thermometer was wacky for the first week or so of my last hatch and several eggs oozed and killed the embryos because the temp was 2degrees higher than I thought. I had 2 chicks hatch outnof 24 and they were both early. So, temp fluctuations are ok as long as they are brief. A spike for 30 minutes shouldn't change your hatch date. A spike of several hours might.
