Mornin' Sally
I understand the mirror, but why red marbles, as opposed to another color? Have anything to do w/eye color? I know my rooster, nasty devil that he is, has red eyes, but I never took particular notice of eye color on any others.

they are attracted to red blue and green..... this is why waterers are red blue or green

so add marbles to the food too, it cant hurt if he wont eat. oh and if you have silly hens that refuse to lay in the nest boxes and keep laying on the floor no matter what you try, fake eggs or whatever, try lowering nest box, adding a higher lip in front of the box and painting the inside bright red or blue..... see if they use it then...... and if you didnt know.... chickens have "one up on humans with eye site!"

THAT EXPLAINS A LOT. In wintertime I have a red wool coat I wear. Went down today for the first time in the coat, was immediately swamped by eight hens wanting breakfast.

I have 7 eggs that are from some fairly new hens, i am 12 hours into day 20, wit no internal pip yet! (soon, I know I am impatient!). Anyhow, I was looking for anyone who had experience hatching small eggs? Do the chicks just come out smaller or is there a good chance I won't get any chicks?
Also, the eggs I buy from the store the eggs crack very easy, where as mine take quite a bang to crack, will the chick be able to get out of it?

it will depend on how your incubation went, welcome to the group!

Thanks!

Anyone got a way to stop hens from roosting in the nesting boxes? Mine are silly girls, they roost on the handle for the removable floors in the nesting boxes.

are your roosts higher than your nests? and what breeds are doing so?

Roosts are the same height at the lowest roost. It's the Wyandotte, the Sex Links, and the barnyard. The other four (two bantams and two average size) roost on the very top roosts, about a full 10 inches higher than the nesting box.
say wa???
