I use a couple old towels for the first couple days then use the newspaper.

What about the newspaper I shredded it.I used newspaper before

Think about the little chicks legs and the shredded newspaper... Now imagine yourself trying to walk through a pool filled with spaghetti... Not very easy to do. I would focus on fixing your brooder and leave the chicks alone and the incubator CLOSED! Trust me, I opened mine early last hatch and shrink wrapped a pip in a matter of seconds. You don't want to watch them suffocate!
