If you turn the lights on at 3 or 4 a.m., rate of lay will pick up in a few weeks.  Any girls who are molting won't be negatively affected by the additional light.

Why is morning lighting better than evening lighting? I know it is better, I just don't understand why. I'm considering putting a timer out there to switch one smaller light on at 4 or 5 a.m. Does it have to be a bright light?

Here's the bugger that was getting chickens through the wire.....

How'd you catch him? How far away did you take him?

The problem with this owl was, he was grabbing the chickens through the wire. They go around and around stirring the chickens up until one cowers in a corner where they can grab them. He was also jumping around on top of my peafowl flight cage like a trampoline making the peafowl and Guineas scream all night.

Evil boy gotta go. Unfortunately, he'll just become someone else's problem, till he finds his way back to you. But, if he comes back, you'll know it's him by his MO.

morning all struggling with a cold this morning . That is what I'm debating right now . weather to light or not if so what to use . what kind of lights I know sidewing put lights on his early on .figured I would research large laying operations and see what they do . but someone on here knows so I don't need to do all that . ok guys give it up what is the answer to Sally's question . I gonna feel really stupid after I post this and read all the answers already posted . got a cold and fever so not all here at the moment . wait a minute that the norm for me right whatever

I start my girls in Sept, adding 1/2 hour/week till they are at a total of 14 hours (artificial + daylight). Use 7W CFL on a timer in a 10 x 12 coop. I think I need to step up my wattage (the bulb is 3 y.o.) because I'm only getting 7 eggs/20 possible producers. Several of them need to be culled, but... I expect more eggs from them than that. Also, I depart from conventional "they say" wisdom by giving my supplement at the end of the day instead of starting it at 2:30 AM. I do not want to be getting up to feed and let out at 2:30, don't want my roo crowing at that hour! They've learned to go to perch before lights go out at 9 PM. Hope you feel better soon. Both my kids have been sick recently, one with URI and fever that lasted over a week, and the other one with stomach flu.

actually it wasn't.my dad doesn't have a job no more so we are struggling.they cant get me eggs or anything like that.so I was sailing some of my stuff to make me some money.to be able to pay for them myself

If money is tight, do not invest in shipped eggs. Please. I'm new to it all but those little changes your incubator had last time would be tragic on eggs that start by being shipped. Look for local eggs. Join the New Year's HAL with the hen's eggs you have in the bator now.

Pardon me if this sounds too blunt, but if there's been no $$ coming into the house since July, buying eggs OR chicks should the the lowest item on your priority list right now, unless your birds are producing income, which I doubt.

I think CH might be able to help out with just selling a few chicks for his family at some point. even if they are mixed and for a few bucks a piece, helps put milk in the fridge.
