Just dropping by to say hi. I told myself no more hatching til next month. Dunno why I'm punishing my inner chicken addict.
Hi Pea!

I dont know why... go get eggs!!

if the electric goes off, you have to do whatever you have to do to keep them warm, if you have to take them to someone that has electric or take them to the car to run them off the car battery. just be careful.
you should ALWAYS have a plan and we also have a electric alarm if we loose electric! you just plug it into an outlet and it sounds when you loose it! and its cheap!

Some other ideas to help maintain heat in your incubator and great when you turn by hand is by adding some sterilized rocks,

or even several sealed jars with warm water or small ziplock baggies with warm water to fill the empty incubator spaces.

A full incubator of eggs always helps maintain a steady temperature even if it’s not good for your chicken math!

MY LOCAL TRANSFORMER BLEW. HOW LONG CAN I GO WITHOUT POWER?? On day 10
Have you covered the incubator with towels or blankets to keep the heat in? You can also fill some baggies with warm water and put them in with the eggs if you have room. Some people have used candles around the incubator and cover it with a box... but use extreme caution so the box doesn't catch fire!

What's the temp down to now? You can put blankets or a heavy jacket over it 'til you can rig something better...just don't cover the vents

Someone beat me to it

Quick update since I noticed Sally mentioned my, ahem, late hatchers. They got dropped in the bator five days late. Checked quickly last night and they should arrive tomorrow
Just setting bator for the New year HAL tonight, will be setting at least two dozen silkies tomorrow
Hope that they are not affected by the cold we have had the last few days zero degrees f overnight and near 32 for a daytime high.

One word of caution... put the rice in a ziplock bag, or anything that is air-tight. Rice is a desiccant, and can suck all the humidity out of your incubator!!!
