Hey, I've actually got some chicken news ( who'd have ever thunk it, on this thread). Along about Feb or March, I'm considering hatching a few chicks from my one hen that lays a pretty dark egg...a lot darker than the other five. I'm looking for a good-looking BCM to put in with them to replace that cantankerous RSL rooster I have now...tired of having to be on guard against him sneaking up behind me. I'm hoping a BCM will darken up the eggs from the whole flock. Should that be the case, or is egg color strictly up to the hen, regardless of the rooster covering her? If everything's on the hen, I'll get a pair of BCM's.
I don't know whether I'll incubate the eggs or not; depends on whether one of the girls cooperates again.

Quote: Both sex's do the shell color. I use a BCM Roo over blue/green layers to get olive, and I have used a EE Roo over BCM hens to do the same thing. Egg color does vary a bit, still working on a stable breed-able shell color.
Good luck, and use the darkest eggs you can get.

We are getting the snow they promised. Snowed a bit Friday night, so pretty. Last night, it started coming down.
Have to shovel a place for the doggies to go potty. For our
little Dachshund..and our old Schnoodle.
Have to do something for that run..there is snow in, tarps not
working so great, had one blow to pieces on that end, had to take
it off. Poor chickies have snow in there, they are staying in the
coop mostly.
Open the front door to this, time to shovel the front.
It is pretty though! And, we need this! Two more days in a
row of it. It's still coming down. Guess we won't be going out
today as we though we would. Maybe later, will see how traffic
is. Need to go to the next town over, but not if the roads are bad.
Got stuck in traffic last weekend coming home, took a good hr.
and 15 mins. to get home because they had to close an exit we
usually take. A truck had Jack Knifed. Traffic, stop and go.
