All this talk about lice and worms. I had chickens at my last house for about 6 years. I've had them at this house for 4. I have never had a worm problem, or lice. Only problem I've had to deal with is the soft eggs before I knew they needed added calcium. They now free feed oyster shells. My broody hen looked pretty bad when she finally stopped brooding, but she is coming back.

I do have my older hen with a swollen back end, but that doesn't seem to be related to anything treatable.

Does EVERYONE have these issues? Are there ways to treat these problems naturally - without chemicals?

Moved chicks to new enclosure last night, still have a gate up 24/7 just in case, but the little dog can climb fences. It's weird.. Well, the Border Collie Reba Gurardian is still here, and she can easily jump the gate. Here as long as she can, until I force her out to take a break. Got a new bulb yesterday, ran out of 120 Watt bulbs, only had 250 Watt Red ones, which was annoying, but it worked in the meantime. Doggies can't get in anymore.

I use the Ivermectin Pour On for cattle for external parasites... it really does work great... got lice from a starling invasion and as I was putting drops on a bird a louse ran into it and died immediately... cleared them all up nice...

I'm not 100% sure on the deworming properties so I run a course of Safeguard and alternate with Valbazen the next round...

I have starling problems here
Everyone thinks they are so cute
They are a horrible invasive species wrecking havoc
Not going to say how I'm dealing with them

I've heard the Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is good at preventing a lot of these parasites. 2% mixed in food for worms, and sprinkling it in dusting area, run, and coop will prevent lice.

I love your guardian pup!! Cute chicks!!! I use red lights on my brooders....they are annoying.

They are annoying to the chicks, as they're always exposed to the glaring light, not to mention expensive to operate or the fire hazard aspect. If you ever try a heat plate, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. It's amazing how calm and quiet chicks are with these heaters.

I've heard the Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is good at preventing a lot of these parasites. 2% mixed in food for worms, and sprinkling it in dusting area, run, and coop will prevent lice.  

DE becomes totally ineffective once wet... I only use it for smell and a bit in dustbath areas, sparingly as chickens are so susceptible to respiratory issues...

I bought a huge bag and put it everywhere... It did nothing to prevent lice and did not treat lice when I covered the birds with it.
