Quote: Guess I'll just have to judge incubation by candling and wait for that first pip to raise humidity? We can cross that bridge later. I have to clean my sewing room first.

@SallySunshine the babies are so cute!! Are you silkie mutts al l silkie, or silkie mixed with other non silkie birds? I call my silkies mutts because they are not true color silkies.

I have no clue, she had a trio of blue silkies but they were in with other bantam gold laced cochin roo and hens, but either way some dont have the extra toes and some only have it on one foot, so my guess is crappy silkies lmao so mutts in my book.
and the cochin mixes are probably hatchery stock too, but it was fun to see some other kinda chicks pop out! so tired of legbar and serama and project birds

Hey whites!

One is six pounds
not yet, but you can process anytime.

It depends on how big you want them, I was told to subtract 1/3 of their live weight to estimate their processed weight. those dont look ready, breastesses are not nice and curvy

Grower Guidelines for Poultry and Fowl Processing

1.1. Assessing live weight of bird
In order to schedule the processing of your
birds, it is necessary to estimate the
approximate processing date based on your
target live weight. Any reliable scale
can provide a live weight of a bird or fo
wl provided that the animal has minimal
movement when weighing. A small cage or crate
can be used. Be sure to tare or zero
out the scale or subtract the weight of the ca
ge or crate only from the weight of the
crate and bird to get net weight of the bird.
Dressed weights are about 75% of live weight
. Most chicken is processed at a 4.5
pounds live weight, and this varies accord
ing to the meat product desired. The
following dressed weights are what
can generally be expected:

Cornish Game Hen 1.5 pounds

Fryer, broiler 3 to 4 pounds

Roaster 5 to 6 pounds

Stewing hen 6+ pounds

December 2007 page 4 of 25
For example:
Crate + bird weight 6.7 pounds
Crate weight 2.3 pounds
Net weight of bird 4.4 pounds
Estimated dressed weight 4.4 x 0.75 = 3.3 pounds
Both the breed of bird and the method
of chilling affect the dressed weight. For
example, water chilled Cornish X’s may be
75%; whereas, air-chilled Cornish X’s
may be 72%. An air chilled heritage bird or
other slow growing bird may be 68-70%.
Exact determination of carcass weight ratios
can only be determined by experience,
and growers who have clients with very sp
ecific weight requirements should keep
this in mind.

So they could go longer, Perfect for grilling at 4 lbs, dressed?

I am so upset with myself, that I just can't stand it!
To raise the temperature in the incubator earlier, I added both plugs. It's only the first day, so not a big deal. I wanted to drop the temperature back down about 2°, but Duckling was grabbing at things, and I turned the dial instead of removing a plug. I will check it in a few hours, but I may have to just remove the eggs overnight until I can get it right again.
I am confessing to this because I don't want anyone else making a stupid mistake like I did! If you are distracted, stay the heck away from the incubator!!
